FFR image for posts

As I mentioned last week in our MommysClub giveaway post, we have been reviewing the MommysClub All In Bundle.

Products in the MommysClub All In Bundle

None of the products smell chemically. They barely have any scent. I love that they are organic and or all natural, toxic-free and hypoallergenic.

MommysClub All In Bundle

Total Body Health with Multivitamin
– To be honest this is weird tasting but I’m not one to shy away from weird tasting health products. Now bad tasting products, I usually won’t buy again. Weird I can get use to. I think only my oldest and I have been taking it.

Total Body Health for Children with Multivitamin
– Only our youngest son likes to drink this. The rest not so much. I’d describe it as liquifying crushed up multivitamins. This would be great for those who cannot swallow pill form vitamins.

Children’s Multivitamin – All the children loved these chewable multivitamins!

Pre-Natal Plus – This is the same as the other liquid vitamins above but for expectant or nursing mamas. I did taste it. The flavor kind of reminded me of another health drink we’ve taken.

Daily Cleansing Foam – I’ve barely used this but it is a no-rinse hand washing solution that hypoallergenic with moisturizer for post-diaper clean up, cuts and burns. This would be nice to keep in the car.

Baby Shampoo – I haven’t even had a chance to fully review this product. I kind of forgot about it amidst all the other products. It smells great though!

Rash & Remedy Skin Relief – Haven’t had any use for this yet. Though Jr. does seem to have some spots I could try it on now that I think about it. It is for rashes and common skin problems.

Perfect Touch Sanitizer – Since we’ve been sick, I’ve been using this sanitizer on taps, door knobs etc. Yep, sick for the first time in two years and we’ve been double slammed in the last month. :(

I cannot honestly say how any of these products work long term because we have only been using them a short time. I can just give you our general thoughts about our initial usage.

Goat Milk Soap Giveaway

Most of you are probably aware that our second oldest daughter B (almost 15!) makes goat milk soap (read more here and here). We are anxiously awaiting for our goats to give birth in April or May so we can have our own supply of goat milk. Since last summer we have struggled to find a local source, but finally the farm we bought goat milk from last February started their kidding season and we have goat milk again!

FFR Goat Milk Soap Baby

FFR Goat Milk Soap Humming Bird

We also have a mold of mama goat and baby, a cow and a baby and a horse. Depending on availability, we will try to offer you a choice. ;)

About Goat Milk Soap

Goat milk soap is one of the most moisturizing soaps around. Our soap is all natural, handmade by our daughter using goat milk and 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils. We also leave some unscented for those with sensitivities. Other ingredients include: organic palm oil, organic olive oil, organic coconut oil, organic shea butter and lye (which is saponified.)

Enter the goat milk soap giveaway below for your chance to win!

We want to offer two of you a chance to win five bars of goat milk soap! ($30-35 Value!). These will be our medium to large bars or a mix of the two. We are running this giveaway longer as it takes the soap four weeks to cure and she is making a new batch so these will be FRESH off the assembly line so to speak.

BabyGanics

FFR image for posts

Keeping my kids clean is always one of my top priorities as a mom.  Making sure my son washes his hands after using the bathroom, before eating, and after playing outside is important to me. Sometimes we are not always at home and finding a bathroom to wash up is not always easy.  In the summertime we like to go to the playground and have picnics. I try to always bring hand sanitizer along so we can be clean before we eat. Have you ever looked at the label of hand sanitizer, and noticed how much alcohol is in them? Most alcohol-based hand sanitizers contain at least 62% alcohol; that’s insane!

photo 1

BabyGanics is different.  Their alcohol free, hypoallergenic formula kills 99.9% of germs.  The problem for me, with most hand sanitizers, is that they dry my hands out so much that I need to apply lotion immediately after.  I most definitely did not need to do this with BabyGanics Foaming Hand Sanitizer.  They have a unique moisturizing formula.

photo 2

The pump style bottle is very convenient and simple to use. My 4 year old can easily pump a small amount of foam onto his hand and rub until it’s all gone. He loves that it’s a foam.

photo 3

Making a somewhat boring task such as cleaning hands, fun for kids makes a world of difference as a mom.  The BabyGanics Foaming Hand Sanitizer is available in Fragrance Free and Tangerine. I tried the Tangerine, and it was such a light scent I barely noticed it. The smell was fresh, but not overbearing.

BabyGanics offers an array of products from Personal Care items to Household Cleaners.  Their mission is to create products to create a safe, healthy, and happy environment for babies and parents. Their products are available in store and online at numerous places. To learn more about BabyGanics and all they have to offer, visit their website at:

Grand Opening of Grocery Store Chicago Mariano’s

I am a member of the Collective Bias® Social Fabric® Community. This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper amplification for Collective Bias and its advertiser. #MyMarianos #CollectiveBias

FFR Grocery Store Chicago Mariano's Lk Zurich Grand Opening

Last week, I had the privilege of attending the grand opening of a new grocery store Chicago Mariano’s in Lake Zurich. I am so excited because this puts Mariano’s even closer to us! I took two children with me and they said the new store was nice and shiny. Neither of them have ever been to Mariano’s.

I have been to three Chicagoland Mariano’s and I have to say that besides the selection of organic products offered, the courteous and friendly staff stood out to me the most – at every store. For example, last week when I went to the customer service desk to meet up with the media contact I spoke with a couple of different Mariano’s employees. Then after the tour of the store I spent well over an hour shopping before heading to check out. I met up with one of those initial staff members near the check out area. He actually remembered me and asked if I found who I was looking. As busy as it was for a grand opening, I was impressed.

I finally signed up for Mariano’s reward card since I plan to be back often and forgot the other two times. Using the sign up kiosk was really easy once an associate got me started.

Lake Zurich Mariano’s Highlights

Those of you reading for any length of time know I love shopping at Mariano’s. It’s always more than a shopping trip, it is an experience. It was no different at the new Lake Zurich store. Below are a few highlights.

The first department I always shop first is the Produce Department. Mariano’s has more than 200 organic choices! We had to buy fruit and veggies for upcoming meals and birthdays!

FFR Grocery Store Chicago Mariano's Lk Zurich Produce Dept.jpg

Mariano’s in Lake Zurich is the only store to offer a specialty balsamic vinegar and olive oil “tasting bar” with 200 different kinds of each product in its International Aisle.

FFR Grocery Store Chicago Mariano's Lk Zurich Vinegar Olive Oil bar.jpg

We love the International Aisle. It’s filled with lots of interesting products from 15 different countries and it’s actually where I found quinoa (keen-wa), an ingredient we need to make Quinoa Hamburger Soup.

Mariano’s Specialty Cheese section is a fun place to visit, featuring hundreds of artisanal, imported and domestic cheeses. Not to mention cheese sampling as well. Yummy!

Mariano’s health key (TM) is helpful in finding products that are gluten-free, vegan, organic or heart healthy.

Meat & Seafood Department. Did you know that Mariano’s will grill your meat or seafood before you take it home? No charge. All you need to do is ask. I didn’t know this. Though I am not fond of seafood, I do like the fact that Mariano’s brings much of their Chicago seafood from shore to store within 24 hours.

There is a dietitian available for consults and education, which was also new to me.

Squeez’d smoothie bar features made-to-order yummy, nutritional fruit and vegetable smoothies, plus Mariano’s signature fresh-squeezed orange and other juices. We got to sample the fresh-squeezed orange juice and it reminded me of my summer in Costa Rica, when our hostess served us fresh-squeezed OJ each morning, just like my grandma use to when I visited her house.

The Bakery Department will make your mouth water with its delectable scents of freshly baked items. We bought sandwich bread and Italian bread.

Coffee lovers will enjoy getting their morning cuppa at Mariano’s Vero coffee shop with authentic Italian coffee and gelato. Shhh….but I’ve never had gelato.

Mariano’s sure was busy and we even visited first thing in the morning! I was very happy it had ample parking and lots of carts, including little red children’s carts – so cute to see little ones helping their moms shop!

You can learn more about Mariano’s by visiting their Facebook page or following them on Twitter.

Coffee Lovers Moody Sisters Review

I was so excited to get a box from Moody Sisters.  They are 100% natural organic materials!  Moody Sisters must have known that I love my coffee.  I received Coffee Body Polish and Coffee Bean Lip Balm.

MS3

With the holiday’s in full swing, Moody Sisters Coffee Body Polish could not have come at a better time!  It naturally reduces the look of cellulite.  I can read and understand all the ingredients – love that!  Check it out – Demara Sugar, Coffee Infused Oil, Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Beeswax, Vitamin E, and Essential Oils.  As you can see in the picture below the texture is grainy but, it goes on smooth.   The smell is out of this world, mixed with the warmth of the shower, it smelled like a coffee house in my shower.  When I came out of the shower my thighs were smooth, great product! The Coffee Bean Lip Balm also has minimal readable ingredients and smelled wonderful.  It applied smooth and lasted.  Coffee Bean Lip Balm also left my lips moisturized, which is a plus during the winter.

Babydoll Sheep

FFR Babydoll sheep

Our farm is going to grow yet again! I’m kind of nervous thinking about it but excited at the same time. When we bought the wool dryer balls from the sheep farmer we also put down a deposit on a breeding pair of sheep for our oldest son! We will get these lambs in the spring so there’s lots of time. It’s just fencing, shelter etc. We do not want to put much money into permanent infrastructure like stalls in the barn because we cannot take it with us. We will probably do temporary housing outside. I know the sheep farm uses calf huts, but I think those can be pricey so we’ll do something like our little hoop house over our raised bed.

The sheep in the photo above are from the sheep farm but owned by our neighbor. When I went there with my friend to look at their Dutch Belted cow, I snapped a photo of the Babydoll sheep. Our neighbor knows the sheep farmers, which is what prompted me to get in touch with them, remembering I had their business card from the Green Expo. I had inquired earlier in the year but never got around to calling them back because we were not at a place of being ready for more animals with all our delays in fencing and waiting for pasture to grow. But our son has been asking so we took the leap of faith and put a deposit down knowing we have to plan ahead for things like this, especially if we want unrelated lambs to breed. Thankfully, we do not have to worry about shearing wool until spring of 2015 and the ewe won’t be bred until she is a year or two old.

Our son’s sheep will be registered Babydoll sheep. He has his names picked out already – Atlas for the ram and Juno for the ewe. It’s always interesting to see what names they come up with. I questioned him gently making sure those were names he wanted before I sent them to the breeder. I just wanted him to be sure. I also asked him if he was going to be able to sell his lambs. He said yes, but we’ll see.

Babydoll sheep are a recovering sheep breed on the Livestock Conservancy priority list. We chose them because they are smaller, plus they are cute!

Calzones Recipe

FFR Calzones Ingredients

A couple of weeks ago I was adventurous and decided to make our calzones recipe, except I couldn’t find it. So I did a quick search to see what ingredients I’d need and then made them my way.

Making Bread Dough in a Bosch Mixer

I made our calzones out of homemade bread dough. In the past I have used the frozen bread dough at the store for quick preparation, but now we have a Bosch and mixing up bread dough is a piece of cake!

FFR Calzones Bread making

Warm water, yeast, sugar, oil and salt.

FFR Calzones bread making_2

Then add unbleached white flour.

FFR Calzones bread making_3

We know the bread dough is ready when it no longer sticks to the side of the Bosch bowl, as shown in the photo below.

FFR Calzones bread making_4

Homemade Calzones Recipe

After I make the bread dough, I spread the balls of dough out. You can also roll them to make nicer cirle-ish shapes.

FFR Calzones with Pepperoni

Then I added toppings of sauce, mozzarella cheese and ricotta cheese. I should have added some broccoli but I didn’t.

FFR Homemade Calzones

I usually top them with more sauce but my daughter took some of these photos for me. We divided up tasks so we could feed our hungry crew!

Calzones Recipe

Now for the actual recipe which is a little “rough” because so much cooking that I do doesn’t follow a recipe. Sorry!

Calzones Recipe

Ingredients

  • Bread dough (I make a large batch of homemade, enough for 3 loaves of bread to feed our family..)
  • 2 - 28 oz cans Organic tomato sauce (We add our own oregano, basil and a little sweetner to our taste.)
  • 1 packet Organic pepperoni
  • 16oz Organic ricotta cheese
  • 1 Large Farm fresh egg :)
  • 16oz Mozzarella cheese

Directions

Step 1
Divide up the bread dough into equal parts. Then roll or pat the balls out into a small circle-ish shape to create your calzones. Put on greased cookie sheets and put to the side to mix up other ingredients.
Mix 1 egg with a 16 oz container of ricotta cheese. Set aside.
Step 2
Make sauce by adding oregano, basil and sweetener to tomato sauce. Start with a couple teaspoons of each and taste test to see if you like it. Keep adding oregano, basil and sweetener until it satisfies your palate. Set aside with rolled out bread dough.
Fold over dough from corner to corner and press to close. Optional: Paint tops of calzones with melted butter and put slits in the top of your calzones for decorative puposes.
Step 3
Go back to rolled out dough and spread tomato sauce out on the dough. Add pepperoni followed by the ricotta cheese mixture and top with a sprinkle of mozaralla cheese.
Step 4
Put in the oven for approximately 30 minutes or until bread dough is cooked through. They should be a golden brown and the inside should be heated. Top the calzones with a couple of spoonfuls of sauce. Serve with a side dish or salad. Voila! Your masterpiece is served!

Do you play with recipes or create your own? Do they turn out?
