Sneak Peek of the KIA Optima Hybrid Car #Brandcation #PigeonForge

This week’s Wordless Wednesday post is a sneak peek of the 2012 KIA Optima Hybrid car. It arrived late yesterday afternoon. The Driver STI specialist drove here and a colleague drove another car so he could have a way home. I thought it was awesome that they actually delivered the car right to my house! They will pick it up in a week’s time. What a great service!

The specialist walked me through a brief demonstration of how the car worked and showed me how to use certain features. The KIA Optima Hybrid car is sleek and still smells so new! We haven’t had a new car to drive in a l-o-n-g time, unless you count driving my mother-in-law’s car whose car really isn’t new anymore since it’s a 2006. I’ve also never driven a KIA, so this is a whole ‘nother new experience, besides driving a hybrid car for the first time.

I think it’s so cool that the KIA Optima Hybrid car starts with the press of a button! That will take some getting use to. I am really looking forward to driving it to Paula’s tomorrow to head to Kim’s and then on to Brandcation Blog Cabin in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

My husband and I took it for a quick spin down our country road. It drives really smooth!

I don’t want to give everything away since I’ll be giving a full report after I get back from Brandcation. Just wanted to tease you a little bit and well….brag a bit too. (blush!) So far my first impression of the KIA Optima Hybrid car is very positive….a 12-hour drive will give me a better idea of it’s overall performance on a road trip. Plus I’ll have two fellow bloggers input too.

While we were loaned the KIA Optima Hybrid car with the agreement to feature of it on our blogs after Brandcation, this post is done of my own volition.

Funk Buddy and Breast Cancer Awareness Month Plus a Recipe

Do you know anyone battling breast cancer? October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast dancer in a lifetime and 289,000 new cases are expected to be diagnosed in US women in 2012. Incredible and sobering. I just went to a seminar on hormones this past weekend and according to the speaker (who has seen NO breast cancer patients in his practice) low progesterone may be the cause of breast cancer in some women. So keep that in mind as suggestion to loved ones and friends, and if they do want to look into it and get their progesterone tested it should be at 10 or above, even if the test says 5 is normal because labs averages are skewed in a major way. Labs throw out the first and last 100 and make the middle numbers their average. Just something I learned at the seminar.

I wanted to help share the news of Funky Buddy and Breast Cancer Awareness Month by sharing a couple of other resources with you.

Funky Buddy

Funky Buddy is simply a buddy program created by Dr. Kristi Funk of Pink Lotus Breast Center in Los Angeles. It’s purpose is to pair newly diagnosed patients with patients she had already treated.

Best Friend’s Guide to Breast Cancer Book

Food is Medicine: The Best Friend’s Guide to Breast Cancer has an appendix of 30 tried-and-true family recipes! I am featuring one of those recipes below that I am really looking forward to trying – have to get zucchini and blueberries first!

Lemony Blueberry Zucchini Loaf (Source: The Best Friend’s Guide to Breast Cancer)

Zucchini is a good source of vitamins A, K, and B6, as well as vitamin C, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Another bonus: it’s rich in the minerals potassium, manganese, and magnesium, which help with immune function. This loaf packs an even greater nutritional punch thanks to the blueberries, well-known as one of nature’s most potent cancer fighters. To top it off, the hint of lemon tingles the tongue and gives a boost to the blandness of the zucchini.

The loaf is hearty enough for breakfast and handy for snacking, too. Because it’s not too sweet, your friend or loved one will find that it’s mild enough if she’s queasy, and the ground ginger will soothe her churning stomach as well. I’ve found that it’s easy to get down when most food isn’t appealing. Of course, it’s a tasty treat when she has her appetite, too!

You’ll need:

1 cup of blueberries
2 cups of peeled, shredded zucchini
3 eggs
¾ cup of vegetable oil
1 and ½ cups of sugar
2 teaspoons of lemon extract
2 and ½ cups of flour
1 teaspoon of salt
½ teaspoon of nutmeg
¼ teaspoon of ginger
1 teaspoon of baking soda
2 teaspoons of baking powder
1 cup of chopped walnuts (optional)
Crisco

1) Heat oven to 350°. Grease only the bottom of two glass loaf pans with Crisco.

2) In one bowl, beat the eggs, then add vegetable oil, sugar, and lemon extract until well blended.

3) In another bowl, sift the flour, salt, nutmeg, ginger, baking soda, and baking powder.

4) Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix until well-incorporated, then fold in the zucchini, then blueberries and walnuts. Pour into the two loaf pans.

Bake for about 50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

A portion of proceeds (20%) from sales of the book is going to support Pink Lotus Petals.

4 Ways to Use Coupons and Get a Discount

I know it isn’t Thrifty Thursday, but I bet we all could talk shopping, discounts, deals and coupons for a l-o-n-g time!

Here are 5 ways to use coupons and get a discount:

1. Use coupons on sales items.

I really enjoy shopping, but I like it even more when I can shop and save money. It’s even better if I can use coupons and get a discount on sale items! I remember when a couple of new stores opened up they offered Grand Opening sales, plus store coupons and then I had manufacturers coupons on top of that….and if I remember correctly I received $100 worth of groceries for $25. That’s a sweet memory. I know couponers do this on a regular basis.

2. Use coupons and you store’s discount or preferred card.

Walgreens and CVS are popular stores people use to save money like my little story above, but I have never been able to do it. Then again, I don’t shop at CVS because there are no stores close to us and we only buy certain products at Walgreens. I think it’s rare to find coupons of products we actually want to buy – No pharmaceuticals, no chemicals and organic as we are really trying to eat healthier and live a healthier lifestyle.

I have only come across a couple coupon sites geared specifically towards organic products, but know that niche is slowly growing. It’s been a while since I did a Google search for organic coupon sites…time to do it again as I have a growing collection of organic, natural product coupons that I want to use up on our next grocery shopping trip.

Since we buy in bulk whether at Costco (which does take some coupons) and at a natural foods co-op, we cannot usually use coupons because we are getting bulk pricing. Nevertheless we can shop the monthly sales which helps us save more money.

3. Shop on days when a store is offering to double manufacture’s coupons. I am not sure how many stores are still doing this so check with your store first.

4. In-store coupons and manufacturer’s coupons usually can be used together, whether the in-store coupon is on an individual product or off your total order.

So how do you use coupons to save money? Please share as we all want to know!

LandCentral Sweepstakes

Shopping for land has been a long and frustrating process for us – because it’s hard to find affordable land where we desire to live. For years we have looked for land and houses in several states. We have looked for land by itself and land that includes a house. Kind of important to have a place to live too as my husband isn’t into camping. There have been several properties we would have loved to have owned but only a few we inquired about.

We have mainly looked for land online, occasionally we’ve used a newspaper, but not very often. We used to years ago, but we’ve become heavy internet users so it’s our go-to place for everything these days, even real estate. The cost of taking a trip to see land in another state, the cost of a move and homeschooling laws (they vary from state to state) and my mother-in-law have always kept us in Illinois. That’s a huge reason we became open to simply renting land so we could stay in Illinois – Land in Illinois is very expensive.

There are a couple regular sites we visit for real estate and land, but we recently learned of a new one for land called LandCentral.com. The site itself is easy to navigate and the information for each listing is an easy to read. They even have an e-newsletter that sends out alerts when property becomes available in your area. The only downfall I see right now is there are no listings for Illinois. Looks like they are working on it though.

LandCentral Sweepstakes

There’s a big giveaway for LAND going on through LandCentral.com sweepstakes. The winner will receive their choice of one of five properties in the US. The giveaway runs from October 1-31.

For years we have wanted to go to Arizona to visit the Grand Canyon, but have yet to. We have looked at a few properties there as I’d love to live some place warm or hot in the case of Arizona! California or Florida would be nice too, except for the earthquakes and hurricanes. Those kind of scare us, but I give people credit who do live with those two things on a daily or seasonal basis. (Joy, Toni, Colleen you all come to mind right now!)

Click this link or the button above or below to enter to win some land of your own. It’s a Rafflecopter form you can fill in as much or as little as you want. The winner of the LandCentral sweepstakes will have their choice of land in Arizona, Pennsylvania, Colorado, California or Florida.

Happy entering!

I wrote this post for the opportunity to be chosen to write on a monthly basis for LandCentral.com

Self Improvement Month and CoolSculpting

I don’t know if you knew this or not because I didn’t until last week, but September is self improvement month. I want to talk a little about my own goals in that department as well as self improvement and Cool Sculpting. While today is the last day of the month I can honestly say that I did work on my own self-improvement when I participated in Mamavation’s 2-Week Challenge.

However, for the the last two weeks since the challenge ended I have not been doing well at all in the exercise department. If you remember I had really wanted to keep up with my daily exercise. I have failed. My eating habits have gone a little downhill too.

I need to come up with a plan of action, like having a set time to exercise each day and sticking to it or else I don’t think I’ll ever get back in the habit of regular, daily exercise. It use to be so easy and now it’s such a struggle.

I really think exercising right when I get up is going to be the key or else it just won’t get done because I’ll start work and won’t stop until late at night. I tried exercising right before bed and it was brutal because I was doing it when I was exhausted and not when I was full of energy first thing in the morning.

That’s my goal, get up, exercise right away, at least 5x/week because it’s the only way I’ll reach my weight loss goals. Along with the exercise, I want to reach the goal of 10K steps every day too (measured with my pedometer).

Self Improvement Month and CoolSculpting

What is CoolSculpting?

It is a new FDA approved, non-invasive procedure for fat reduction. It involves no knives, no suction hoses, no needles and not even lasers are used. CoolSculpting is a procedure that freezes your fat cells without harming your skin. After your treatment, you get on with your busy day. According to their Facebook page, people see an average of 20% reduction in fat after one visit. If it’s necessary, you and your doctor may decide on more treatments at which time more fact reduction is to be expected. No pills or supplements are required as long as you maintain your weight with normal diet and exercise, your long-term results should remain stable. Hello, you again.

Sounds pretty cool, eh? I don’t know about you but it sounds a lot more appealing than undergoing the knife.

Have you ever considered weight reduction surgery of any kind? I never have…until I started watching the past season of Extreme Weight Loss. That’s when I realized how it almost seemed necessary for people who lose a lot of weight to do something with their excess skin.

In honor of Self-Improvement Month, CoolSculpting is hosting a Self-Improvement Instant-Win Challenge inviting you to make one small pledge on how you will improve your health and fitness routine this month (and future months since the challenge goes through the first week of October). If you do make a pledge to improve something, you will be given the opportunity to win one of 10 instant win $50 Amazon e-cards or the grand prize of a $500 American Express Gift Card. Who couldn’t use an extra $50 or $500 right now?

Enter the pledge on CoolSculpting’s Facebook sweepstakes page.

Pre-Order The Amazing Spider-Man Gift Set #SpiderManWMT #Cbias

After the success of last week’s Avenger party, my children are very excited about The Amazing Spider-Man coming out on DVD too. They’ve been asking me to watch Thor, The Avengers etc. with them. Now that I have Captain America under my belt they are eager to introduce me to the rest of the movies in the series. We may get to watch one of them this weekend depending upon if I get my posts done up for the week since I leave for Brandcation on Wednesday.

Pre-Order The Amazing Spider-Man

When the children heard we were going to go to Walmart to pick up the pre-order The Amazing Spider-Man DVD or Blu-ray they were pretty eager to go with me. One son said, “Really?” He was surprised but happy. My four year old son was very excited because I told him he could have a new spider-man mask since his little fabric one that came with his dollar store spider-man costume is all torn.

I took five children with me to the store. It’s funny because they gravitated towards the costumes they saw last week and of course discovered new things. Then there was this huge pumpkin decoration with crazy eyes that my youngest daughter calls, “Hypnotizing”. It cracks me up what children come out with.

Of course on our way back to the electronics department we got side tracked in the party supply aisle as the kiddos remembered we went down there last week too. We noticed a couple of new Avenger items which disappointed the children because they were not available when we shopped for our Avengers party, but there was lots of Spider-Man supplies to choose from.

Then we found the pre-order spider-man item and it was completely different than I thought it would look since I had in my mind the photo on Walmart’s website. I thought the exclusive movie gift set came with an actual mask, but it doesn’t…eeeeks…..there’s going to be a disappointed boy if I don’t fix that!

So off to the toy section to pick up a sturdy mask the boys can share but Nookie can use first. Hoping to surprise him in the morning with it!

And before I headed out for a seminar today I gave Nookie the spiderman mask….I think he looks pretty pleased, don’t you?

Vudu.com and Ultra Violet

With the pre-order of spiderman we received a free digital copy of the movie on Vudu. Once we got home I wanted to see what the whole pre-order process was like and figure out Vudu.com and Ultra Violet because I’ve never pre-bought anything like this before. Vudu.com is a site where you can stream, rent or buy DVDs – for multiple devices too. They even have a tab to convert DVDs to digital format, which I haven’t tried yet, and you can store them online. I definitely see advantages to this as we have had several DVDs get broken and had we been able to store them digitally right after we bought them we would still have them. Vudu charges for individual DVD rentals and conversions. It is not a monthly subscription service. You only pay for what you use or buy.

I am still trying to figure out what Ultra Violet is, but from what I can tell it is another site that allows consumers to stream movies and TV shows with multiple devices. Here’s what their FAQs page says:

UltraViolet is a free, online Collection that gives you greater flexibility with how and where you watch the movies and TV shows that you purchase. Once a movie or TV show has been added to your UltraViolet Collection, you will have options to stream it over the internet, download it for offline viewing, or play it back on a disc. Because UltraViolet offers so many viewing choices, you have greater freedom to choose where you want to watch – whether its on a mobile device, computer, television, game console, etc.

It was pretty simple to sign up for a Vudu account. I followed the prompts on the screen, some of the steps are shown in the photos below.

We are all set to watch the digital version of The Amazing Spider-Man and we should receive the Blu-ray + DVD gift set a few days before the movie hits store shelves. My children are already talking about a spiderman party!

To learn more about The Amazing Spider-Man or to stay up to date on news about the movie be sure to follow on the movie on Twitter and Facebook. If you do tweet, use the hashtag #SpiderManWMT to increase visibility and hopefully help the movie trend on Twitter.

Talking to Toddlers

Talking to Toddlers is a mini parenting course about talking to toddlers. There are 12 talks and each talk is approximately 10-20 minutes long and comes with a little summary and homework to practice what the talk went over. This course was created by Chris Thompson, author of Talking to Toddlers – Dealing with Terrible Twos and Beyond.

All three of us moms here at Faith and Family Reviews had the opportunity to listen to Chris Thompson’s audio about Talking to Toddlers. I thought I’d let us all have a space to share our thoughts. See below….Professor’s will be forthcoming.

Brande’s Thoughts on Talking to Toddlers

I’m not a yeller, however, I am a No..No…No… Mom. I really try and keep my anger levels low, but we all have a breaking point, right? Chris Thompson really helps to keep you together with his 12 tracks.

I paid close attention to Chapter 3 – How to Avoid Saying “No” While Getting What you Want. I’ve been try to use the “I understand that you want _________, however ____________” which does work sometimes. We usually end up getting into the “Why’s”. Which sometimes gets unnerving, too. But, I always remind myself she is only 3 and still little.

As every parent learns you pick your battles. Bringing me to Chapter 7. Our battle is clothing! It could be 20 degrees outside and my daughter wants to wear a sundress. THE BATTLE IS ON! After our disagreement and she is now in jeans and long sleeve shirt, if she grabs a crown and pocketbook and we are heading to the grocery store fine by me. We tend to lay clothes out the night before if we are heading out to keep the morning battles to a minimum.

I’ve started counting and if I get to 3 and your still doing a “bad” thing, you are heading to your room. Then the stomping, crying, and sorry’s begin. I will let her sit in her room for a few minutes and then head in to talk to her about what she did wrong and why she didn’t stop when I asked. Time outs didn’t work when she was younger, however, putting an item she loves in time out corrected the situation.

All in all, Mr. Thompson has wonderful tips and very useful!

Theresa’s Thoughts on Talking to Toddlers

Talking to Toddlers is a parenting series, but it’s not just for talking to toddlers, it’s for any child over the age of two. Chris even had a friend use it on his girlfriend! Chris had some very good reminders. If you remember, when my older children were little I read A LOT of parenting books, so many of Chris’ tips were the ones I had heard before, just presented in a different way.

While much of what he said was familiar, I appreciated hearing it again since we have a 2 year old in the house who isn’t much of talker yet. He’s the child that screams in protest because shaking his head no isn’t as effective in expressing himself. I am sure we have unintentionally trained him to be like this because none of our others were screechers like him.

Most of our children are getting older and hitting the double digits and teen years and much of what was presented seems to be what we’ve already worked through with them and our middle children. We generally do not have battles over clothing, going to bed or leaving the park or toy section of a store because we’ve learned how to work through those things. And if we do, it’s rare. The children know and have learned there are consequences if they choose to make a fuss. The most effective consequence for store fusses, we leave them home the next shopping trip, same as going to the park…after a couple of times they learn that it just isn’t worth the fuss to miss out on a fun outing. We only have a couple of children where it’s taken several times – those are the children who learn the hard way. Now we just have to work through all of this with Junior!

I can definitely relate to the “lazy parent” because I just don’t have the time I use to when I was parenting the older children. Sad but true and certainly no excuse for Junior’s lack of training. Talking to Toddlers just made me realize how much work I have to do with our youngest.

A warning for those who do not use curse words of any kind, there are a couple of spots Chris could have used “ticked off” or “upset” instead of the alternative. As with any parenting resource, parenting styles differ from parents to parents, therefore take what you need/what works from this Talking to Toddlers and leave the rest.

P.S. I just thought of ways to use Talking to Toddlers with my older children…with their chores and practicing their music…now to incorporate it!

Ever Been to Genghis Grill?

Eating out is a treat for our family, as it was for me growing up. My husband’s family ate out a lot and still do. We do not frequent most major fast food places just because they do not serve healthy food. Unhealthy food is never filling and when our children have had it, it leaves them feeling hungry an hour later. We’d rather they fill up on nutritious, healthy foods instead.

Genghis Grill

Genghis Grill is a growing restaurant featuring a unique build your own bowl experience using the Asian stir-fry. According to their website, the experience offers a fun way of cooking similar to what may have been used by 12th century Mongol warriors, led by GENGHIS KHAN, according to an ancient legend. The legend also indicates they used fires to heat their shields so they could grill their food. Now, my boys would love that fact!

Definitely an inspiring little history behind Genghis Grill.

We have never been to Genghis Grill, as a matter a fact, there’s only one in the state of Illinois, but it is only about an hour drive from us.

The Food

If the photos are any indicator, the food at Genghis Grill looks yummy! They serve a variety of protein, including ham, chicken, turkey, beef and fish. Their seasonings range from hot cayenne to garlic and lemon pepper. They also give a wonderful choice of yummy veggies. Their sauces are free of MSG…bonus…and sound delicious. Lastly they serve pasta, rice, tortillas and noodles. If you go to their website you can follow the steps and create your own bowl.

When I built my bowl, the calories weren’t bad for turkey, lemon pepper sauce, veggies, sweet and sour sauce with some fried rice. However, the sodium measured 1500mg! So those watching their sodium intake should watch the nutritional calculator carefully.

Khans Klub

Genghis has a birthday club called, Khans Klub, which enables those who sign up to receive a FREE bowl of your choice. Happy Birthday to you!

Be sure to visit Genghis Grill’s Facebook page and Khans Klub Facebook page as well.

When is the last time you ate out? Where’d you go?

1 Week Away ’til Brandcation Blog Cabin #Brandcation #PigeonForge

Brandcation Blog Cabin…it seems like just yesterday that I was coming home from my very first blogger conference, Brandcation Bloggers Gone Coastal, and here I am a week away from attending my second Brandcation! I can’t believe how fast time has flown by. It has been an incredibly busy two weeks and I know the next two weeks are going to be the same.

Brandcation Blog Cabin

I will be traveling down to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee with two fellow bloggers, Kim and Paula. These two ladies snagged us a Kia Optima Hybrid to drive down in. I am the “lucky” lady who gets to check it out first since I am farthest north. It’s arriving on Tuesday at 10 am and I am very excited. At this point it’s sad to say, but I am more excited about test driving a hybrid car than Brandcation…it’ll come, but first things first though, right? 😉 Can’t wait to tell you all about the Kia Optima Hybrid and Brandcation on my return!

Doesn’t it look slick? I have no idea what color it will be or anything, but I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures!

Brandcation Blog Cabin Sponsors

Brandcation Blog Cabin is being hosted in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee October 4-7. We, as in me and 33 other bloggers, will be visiting some area attractions, many of whom are sponsoring us to attend their events. So a huge pre-Brandcation shout out to them for hosting 34 bloggers!

Those attractions include, in case you missed my last post:

Cabin Fever Vacations (accommodations)
Dollywood
Dixie Stampede show
Country Tonight
Lumberjack Feud
Titanic Museum
Climb Works for Ziplining
Wax museum
Flashy Blinky Lights

Be sure to hop on over to A Daily Dose of Tony to see who I’ll be sharing the big, beautiful blog cabin with…my cabin mates. She’s done a great video in honor of our 80’s theme party, which I found an outfit for…two actually. Just have to wash them up and try them on, hoping at least one of them will fit me! I think I’ll be rather boring and “tame” compared to some others…at least from the discussions I saw about their 80’s costumes!

Thanks again to Trisha, Lynsey, Kim, and Blondie and to the sponsors for making this event possible!!

Play MG Think Christmas and Pre-Order!

Technology continues to amaze me. MG (more game) is a portable WiFi gaming system. It eliminates the need for packaged games or data plans that are required for the ever popular smartphone. It allows kids to enter the world of freemium Wi-Fi App gaming safely and affordably. Sounds like a gamers delight.

There is a new feature in The MG Family Collaboration System called “Digital Wallet” and “Remote Trust” notification functions:

The “Digital Wallet”: Parents can offer “game allowances” through a reloadable BillMyParents SpendSmart prepaid MasterCard. This is a creative way to teach pre-teens or Teens about budget and learning spend with in a budget.

“Remote Trust”:
Parents can choose to receive email or text updates on MG account activity.

Here’s how it works:

When an MG gamer enters her BillMyParents account number into the MG’s Family Collaboration System app, she can see her SpendSmart prepaid MasterCard balance right on her device. The BillMyParents SpendSmart system allows parents to remotely observe how their teens are spending their game allowances via text, email or by going online, and encourages family dialogue about smart spending habits. Parents can even lock or unlock the card with a text message if necessary. MG is the first to include a BillMyParents SpendSmart prepaid MasterCard directly into the MG device, giving parents an easy, safe way to moderate teen gaming purchases, while reinforcing the concepts of budgeting and making smart spending choices.

These are features sound like they are more for a parent’s peace of mind, but I am sure kids will enjoy the freedom it allows them to experience. Plus, it is the 1st portable Android gaming system with BillMyParents SpendSmart MasterCard. I haven’t used the MG system, but have been told, “It’s a dedicated device for app gaming using the Android platform so your kids can play any game they’d download on your iPhone on their very own portable gaming system and you don’t have to worry about paying for a data plan or buying game cartridges like you would with a Nintendo DS.”

Play MG Think Christmas and Pre-Order!

MG is available to pre-order right now at a savings of $70 off the suggested retail price of $169 when it launches later this year. The first 2000 early adopters who visit Kickstarter.com (search PlayMG) will be rewarded with an MG at cost for this holiday season. Other supporters will be able to order their MG for $20 off ($149).

Sounds like gamer parents might like to pre-order this now just for the savings offered. I believe this promotion is coming to an end soon so be sure to take advantage of it now rather than later.
