Shadows of the Past by Patricia Bradley

Shadows of the Past by Patricia Bradley

Shadows of the Past by Patricia Bradley is a romantic suspense and the first book in the Logan Point series.

Taylor Martin, a Psychology professor and criminal profiler, experienced abandonment when her father up and left their family when she was a little girl. That event in her life left her with so many unanswered questions she sets out to find her father. Little does she realize that in doing so she would put herself and others in danger.

The book details how Taylor and her family find closure to the biggest mystery of their life. Taylor also finds love in an unlikely place, Nick Sinclair, the brother of one of the suspects in one of her murder profile cases.

Patricia Bradley really kept me on my toes. I was guessing until three quarters the way through the book. I was torn between who was behind the threats thrown at Taylor, the violence and the murders. There was only one murder mystery I figured out right away. I liked the twists and turns the plot took. As always the romance was pretty predictable, but how many different ways can you spin boy meets girl or girl meets boy and likes, then loves each other?

I really like these kinds of books not only for the mystery and intrigue but the character’s development and growth, as well as the fact there is no coarse language or raunchy sex. I believe sex is good, even great, (insert smiley face) within the boundaries of marriage, but I don’t need to read stories about sex when I have my own intimate life. Just saying, and thought I’d point out a different aspect to like about this book series and others like it.

Two thumbs up from me.

Depend Fit Flex – Dad Central

FFR image for posts

“I participated in a campaign on behalf of Dad Central Consulting for Depend. I received products samples and a promotional item as a thank you for participating.”

By Guest Dad Blogger – Scott

Here’s another one of those taboo conversations.

depend

Many people have had that moment after they sneeze or just can’t hold it.  The panic sets in…. wondering….. can anyone see anything? You may have a feeling of being ashamed or just bummed because you are getting older.

I’m here to tell you. You are not alone. Millions of people suffer from incontinence.  No need to be embarrassed or ashamed.  Depend’s new Fit-Flex is here to help.

Many people expressed concerns to the Depend brand about being bulky and not being able to live life to the fullest. Depend revamped their design and with Depend Fit Flex there’s no need to slow down your active life.  Depend Fit Flex is so discreet you are able to wear your regular favorite attire and it goes unnoticed.  Making you feel more confident and able to take back your active life style!

On the Depend site there are 3 inspiring stories. My favorite is Paul’s, he is living with incontinence. When Paul first experienced bladder issues he became embarrassed. Being unable to cope with this condition, Paul’s marriage fell apart. Then he began gaining weight in his 40’s and on his 50th Birthday he made a decision. He was going to turn his life around.  He began running and his life changed after marrying his 2nd wife. She helped him cope with his incontinence and get on with his life. Paul now uses Depend Fit Flex regularly and has lost his weight gain. This is such an inspirational story in many ways.

Get on with your life!  Enjoy running, bike riding, hiking, and vacations!

Mar Jennings is known as a top lifestyles expert.  Here are a few active lifestyle tips from him.

* “Staying active is easier when you love what you do, be it hiking, horseback riding, tennis, or taking a brisk walk.  Find what calls to you and get moving!”

*  “Have a clear vision of what you want “you” and your life to look like in six or 12 months.  Start small and think big; the results over time will be impressive.”

Don’t stop living because of bladder issues. Depend offers underwear, briefs, guards, and shields for men and women.  Click here to request a free sample.

With Autumn’s Return

FFR image for posts

With Autumn's Return

As you know from past book reviews, I enjoy Christian historical fiction. With Autumn’s Return by Amanda Cabot is one of those books. I wanted to read it because I have read the first two books in the Westward Winds series (Book 1 and Book 2). This book was about Elizabeth Harding, the youngest sister in the Harding family.

Elizabeth Harding is a female doctor in Cheyenne, Wyoming during the 1800’s. I appreciated her fortitude to do what she felt called to do despite the disapproval of many. Women doctors were not popular or accepted easily in that time in history. Dr. Harding’s fortitude is something I could use a good dose of on my bad days! Ha! I also related to her struggle as a working woman and her fears and concerns over having a family with her chosen profession. She had working mom guilt before she was even a mother, but I think many of us must struggle with this when we choose to work or are forced to because of circumstances out of our control.

Dr. Harding showed godly character when she chose to treat the ladies of one of the local brothels. She treated them with respect and dignity despite their profession. I think this is something lacking in today’s Christianity. As Christians or followers of Christ, we are called to love, yet there’s still so much hatred in the world against those who may be different from us and that’s not just outside the church it is within it as well.

I enjoyed the friendship between her and Jason. I think friendship should be the basis of any romantic interest and like it when it’s portrayed in that light.

The book wasn’t all a bed of roses. Mystery, murder and deceit were woven into the plot to spice up the book and make it more than just a romance novel. Don’t get me wrong it was not a mystery novel but it definitely those elements made it more than just another boring romance.

Was the book predictable? Admittedly, yes. Was it interesting? I’d have to say so since I like reading about that time period. Was it one of my favorite books to read? No, not really, but I enjoyed it and give it a thumbs up.

Get Healthy with Insync Probiotic #NaturalProbiotic #shop #cbias

FFR Insync Natural Probiotic_

Our family really strives to live a healthy lifestyle, but I want to preface that by saying we don’t do it perfectly and we are still on our journey to better health. Always room for improvement, right? Though I have to say we celebrate our two year anniversary of being cold and flu free next month! One of the ways we live healthy is taking a natural probiotic and a daily multivitamin.

Insync Probiotic

FFR Insync Probiotic_at Meijer stores

Insync Probiotic is a natural probiotic I have been taking for the past three weeks. It is available at Meijer stores in the “condition specific” section. It contains doctor recommended B. infantis’, which is a healthy probiotic bacteria that has been found to help women with irritable bowel syndrome (Source: National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library of Medicine). I have found it easy on my digestive system.

Four Things to Stay Healthy

Here are four other things to do to help maintain a healthy digestive system balance in addition to taking a natural probiotic.

1. Eating the right foods. One of my favorite fall and winter time foods is soup, especially Potato Kale Soup. It has lots of yummy veggies that keep your digestive system going.

FFR Potato Kale Soup_

It looks wonderful in the above photo with all its brightly colored vegetables, and it’s how the children prefer it, but I prefer to blend it together as the recipe calls for, which makes it look not quite so appealing. It is oh-so-yummy though!

2. Getting enough sleep is an important part of staying healthy and giving our body the rest it needs to function properly.

FFR Insync Probiotic_sleeping photo

3. Get enough exercise. I struggle with this one because I like to get my exercise naturally rather than go to the gym or get on exercise equipment. One of the reasons I want to live on a farm! The thing is I have so many children that usually what’s left for me is weeding the garden which no one else enjoys. Before my older two boys took it over, one of my favorite things to do in the winter was shovel snow. Exercise aids in regular bowel movements.

4. Laughter. We are all probably familiar with the old proverb “Laughter is good medicine”, but it rings true. Exercise, laughter and having fun gets the endorphines going and reduces stress in our life. Less stress promotes good digestion and promotes good health.

The Calling

FFR image for posts

The Calling Suzanne Woods Fisher

The Calling by Suzanne Woods Fisher is another great book by Suzanne Woods Fisher. It is the second book in The Inn at Eagle Hill series. It is a clean, all round good read.

As you all know, I am intrigued by the Amish and appreciate their deep sense of community and commitment to one another and this story exemplifies this in a very real and strong way. I cannot tell you how or I’d reveal part of the mystery of the book.

I really enjoyed getting to know Bethany’s character better. I loved how she played hard to get with her “friend” Jimmy. :) She also displayed wisdom and how she learned from her past mistakes.

The mystery, twists and turns surrounding Bethany’s mother kept me guessing and wondering. I also cried buckets over the revelation of that whole story line.

Another part of the Amish community I enjoy is the respect the younger have for the elderly. In this series, there is a group of five spinster sisters who stand out for their service and commitment to the community, but they also stand out for the way in which they care and interact with the younger generation. The younger in turn cares and respects them. It seems more rare than common in our society today.

I love Bethany’s sister Mim and how she secretly provides advice in her Mrs. Miracle column of the newspaper and how supportive Bethany was of her endeavor.

The growth of Bethany’s brother, Toby, was revealed in this book and I was relieved when he turned out to be a “good” person and chose to do the right thing in spite of the consequences. That’s not always an easy thing to do but it is the honorable thing to do.

The guest, Geena, who visited the Inn at Eagle Hill in this book was a central part of the book and I appreciated her struggle with her “calling” but also how she allowed herself to be used where she was and how she integrated into the Schrock’s family and community.

If you haven’t guessed already, The Calling gets two thumbs up from me!

No One to Trust

FFR image for posts

No One To Trust by Lynnette Eason

I haven’t been reading much lately but I did have the privilege of reading No One to Trust: A Novel (Hidden Identity) by Lynette Eason. It’s the first book in a new series called Hidden Identity. I am happy to say it is not your so called typical suspense romance novel, in the fact that boy meets girl etc. It is about an already married couple who have to find their love and romance again amidst some difficulty and life threatening circumstances.

No One to Trust is about the Abernathys, a married couple whose marriage takes a completely different turn when Kyle turns out to be someone else entirely!

As life takes a dangerous turn for the Abernathys they learn quickly who they can trust and who they cannot trust, though Summer Abernathy feels she has no one to trust, including her husband.

I could relate to some of the trust issues the characters, especially Summer, struggled with. It is very hard to be hurt by someone you care about and not know who you can trust or if you can ever trust that person again.

No One to Trust: A Novel (Hidden Identity)
is about learning to trust again, especially God, and learning to forgive so you can trust again. I think my issue is unresolved forgiveness hindering my trusting people again.

I really enjoyed this “candy” read because I couldn’t put it down until I read the whole thing! I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Perfumes and Colognes

FFR Featured Post

I’m not a huge perfume fan but I have my favorite, which is also my husband’s favorite, but it is no longer made by its manufacturer. Boo hoo. I am on my last bottle of it. It’s been nearly 20 years since I bought it, at which time I bought like four of them. Let’s just say I have used it very sparingly and for mostly special occasions.

My husband doesn’t always use cologne or aftershave. Sometimes I even have to hint for him to put some on, other times he surprises me. I’ve loved my husband’s cologne since I have known him. He uses Drakkar Noir. Sigh. I get dreamy eyed smelling it on him! (blush!)

Men's Cologne Drakkar Noir

I actually bought him some as a surprise at Christmas time since he was getting low. It was a discount fragrance and an impulse buy while grocery shopping. I’m glad I got it for him because now he can wear it more often!

Did you get any new perfume for Christmas? What is your favorite perfume or men’s cologne?

With the holiday’s in full swing, Moody Sisters Coffee Body Polish could not have come at a better time!  It naturally reduces the look of cellulite.  I can read and understand all the ingredients – love that!  Check it out – Demara Sugar, Coffee Infused Oil, Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Beeswax, Vitamin E, and Essential Oils.  As you can see in the picture below the texture is grainy but, it goes on smooth.   The smell is out of this world, mixed with the warmth of the shower, it smelled like a coffee house in my shower.  When I came out of the shower my thighs were smooth, great product! MS1

MS2

The Coffee Bean Lip Balm also has minimal readable ingredients and smelled wonderful.  It applied smooth and lasted.  Coffee Bean Lip Balm also left my lips moisturized, which is a plus during the winter.

Gift Ideas for Mom and Dad – Active Faith Sports

FFR image for posts

Less than a week before Christmas and all in the house were scurrying about, trying to come up with last minute gift ideas for mom and dad…..

Is that you? I only have a few gift cards left to get and some flowers to order (which may be already ordered by the time this post goes live!) If you have some people of faith on your gift list who are into fitness Active Faith Sports may have some gift ideas for you. I recently got my husband a pair of “basketball” shorts as most of his are nearly 20 years old – I don’t know how that man retains clothing that long! Guess he bought quality clothes that lasted.

Active Faith Sports_shorts

We found the Active Faith Sports basketball shorts to run big. Robert likes them longer since he is tall, but the large are big on him. Not so much in the waist as the legs. My husband says they feel nice and are comfortable just baggier than he usually wears and prefers. He has super thin legs though! They’d probably be fine on a larger framed man. The material is breathable and decent quality. I cannot say how they wash up since my husband doesn’t usually wear shorts in the winter and he’s not part of a fitness center or gym. If I remember, I will try to update this post to reflect laundering come spring time.

FFR Active Faith Sports R in Shorts

Please note his model pose in his hand…goofy man…he makes me laugh though! Couldn’t mess too long with the photos because he told me to hurry up because he was cold!

FFR Active Faith Sports R in Shorts 2

Prices for Active Faith Sports are in the middle range. Not cheap, not super expensive. They are hosting 12 days of Christmas deals. Each day something new is on sale so if anything strikes your fancy be sure to visit their website for the daily Christmas sales.

Active Faith Sports also offers women’s wear and kids wear. Perfect for a physically active family. And of course the whole goal of Active Faith Sports is to allow Christians in sports to share their faith with others, thus the name “Active Faith.” A company worthy of mentioning and supporting this Christmas season.
