I’m a Coppertone Water MOM!

Summer is coming, don’t forget your sunscreen!

Growing up I remember using the bottle with a little girl loosing her bottoms to the puppy.  Well, here I am years later still using Coppertone for myself and family.

I received a brochure called “Sunderstanding”.  It has great information, I’d like to share.

I’ll be updating you periodically on how we are doing with our Coppertone Sunscreen.  We’ve really only had one day so far here in NJ where temps were above 70, and I didn’t have my Coppertone Sunscreen then.  It’s been rainy and soggy here, so I’ll keep you posted!  But, for now you can head to Coppertone’s webpage and print out a coupon or download their MyUV Alert app through Itunes.

I’m very excited about being selected to be Coppertone Water MOM!

Thank you Coppertone and MomSelect!

Wordless Wednesday – Spring Brings Robins Eggs

You know spring has arrived when you spot robins eggs. Our children have found a couple of robin’s eggs in our backyard. When our four year old came to the door with the second one I managed to think fast and get a couple of pictures. Unfortunately, when he went to put it under one of our trees he tripped and cracked the egg. That’s when we found out why we were finding them on the ground – they were duds. Only an egg yoke was inside, no baby bird was developing.

KidsBowlFree.com

Look what I found this morning!  How exciting!  This is the information I’ve gathered through Kidsbowlfree.com .  “Registered kids receive 2 FREE games of bowling everyday all summer long”.  They mention the value is over $500.00 per kid!  I imagine this would be if you went everyday.  Click on your state in the US or Canada to find your nearest bowling center.

I went to my nearest center and currently they are only taking email address to send you more information for this summer once it’s available.

I had questions and went to the F.A.Q.  Most of the answers I found depend on the bowling center itself.  My three biggest questions were what are the age requirements? Do I need to pay for shoes? When is the free bowling? (dates, times, days) Unfortunately, I won’t find out these answers until registration opens and I get my email.

They also have a benefit for families!  KidsBowlFree.com has a Family Pass!  For $24.95 (according to their site) for the summer up to 4 adults, get 2 free games person per day also!

This is great family fun time!  I’ll update you when I get my email!

Maple Syrup & Hospitality – Monday Motivation

For once my Monday Motivation is not about cleaning or working, but about showing hospitality and sharing our experience making maple syrup. This week on one of the homeschool yahoo groups someone posted about a maple syrup event that was a great children’s activity especially for homeschoolers, however, it was with a cost. I know how much homeschoolers watch their budgets, after all I am one! So without too much thought I posted inviting interested families to our house for a FREE homeschool activity to see what we have done to make our own maple syrup this year. After I hit send, I was like, “Oh-oh, what have I done?” I wasn’t expecting much response and about four families responded. Therefore, we’ll be getting ready for our guests this week, as I thought hot chocolate and homemade cookies were in order to go along with the children learning about where maple syrup comes from and how it is made.

The catch is we got snow and it is colder so the sap may not be running this week, but we’ll wait and see. Someone said it was going to hit the 50’s by mid-week, which will be perfect and muddy. It should be fun to meet new people and share what the Lord has blessed us with here with our maple trees and space.

This week’s motivation is to share our home and maple syrup adventure with other homeschooling families. Hopefully blessing them by helping them save money on an outing and to show them if we can do it so can they!

The Rest of Our Maple Syrup Story

Obviously we are not done tapping our trees or collecting sap, nevertheless, I thought it was time to show the rest of our maple syrup adventure or what we have recorded so far. We’ve had a few mishaps and bumps in the road and may not get as much sap as we had hoped. 🙁 You see, we have had wind blow our bags off, we have had them fall off due to being too heavy and we have had certain family members dump our maple syrup down the drain thinking it was water in the pot! Yeah, that’s what I said. This happened two different times by two different people and I am like, “Can’t you ask first? We are making syrup!?” Talk about aggravating, to say the least. Both individuals were apologetic and felt bad, but accidents happen…..still, just ask!

Our Tapping Adventure Continues

Drilling.

The younger ones wanted to try too.

The tap is in. We were not very happy about the sap dripping out below the tap, but that was rectified once we got the drill boring the right way!

The bags were put on the little metal hangers and set on the taps.

The day we put them up the sap was running fast. This is what we got within the first couple of hours.

Then by late afternoon, look what we had!

We improvised when we ran out of metal hangers and use a milk jug and wire.

This pot was full of sap and you have to boil it down to almost nothing.

Then we filtered the sap to get dirt and any other unwanted particles out of the syrup.

Baby wanted in on the action too.

Not a lot of syrup and by the time we had bottle it (sorry no picture of that!) we only got a quart out of 3-4 bags of sap. It wasn’t as thick as we would have liked, so it should have been boiled more. We know that for the next batch we do, as we are living and learning as we go along.

Dye Job – Easter’s Coming!

I was looking at my Food Network Magazine(April 2011) and found on page 115 a great way to dye Easter eggs with stuff you may have at home.  The article goes onto say…

“This year’s egg-dyeing kit might already be in your pantry: We tried dyeing eggs with ingredients we had on hand – candy, spices, fruit – and ended up with this amazingly colorful half dozen.  To make your own, boil 2 cups of water with 1 tablespoon of vinegar, add your “dye” (12 Now and Later candies, one 7-ounce box of Red Hots, 1 tablespoon Jell-O or Kool-Aid, 1/2 cup of frozen blueberries or 2 tablespoons turmeric) and simmer 15 minutes; strain into a mug for dyeing.  Experiment with ingredients in your own kitchen:  If it’s something that stains your clothes, chances are it’ll work wonders on an egg!”

I made 2 different dyes on Saturday.  One blueberry (on the left) and the other to the right is mixed berries (strawberry, raspberry, & blueberries).  Here’s the proof….

It works!  I left them in the dye for about 20 minutes.  They are lighter than the packaged dyes you will get at the store, but at least you know the ingredients in these dyes!  I was thinking about maybe trying beets.  What are your ideas?

Costume Discounters Review

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

Have your kids picked out their Halloween costume yet?  No!?  Halloween is only 7 months away!  Well, let Costume Discounters help out the whole family!  They have an extensive collection of costumes, including Easter, mascots, infants, and plus size.

My Review:

I received a Girls XS (3T-4T) Deluxe Toddler Alice in Wonderland costume for my daughter.

The deluxe costume comes with dress with attached pinafore, ruffle trim petticoat, and headband with a teal blue bow.  The dress is 100% Polyester in a beautiful teal blue color.   The attached pinafore has a silver edged ruffle with a lovely picture of Alice holding a cup of tea on one side and glittery tea cups on the other.  The bow has a plastic piece in the center with a picture of Alice on it.  The petticoat that goes under the dress is 100% Olefin.  The dress and petticoat both have velcro closures.  The headband is plastic, but has a good strectch that seems like it won’t break easily.  The entire outfit needs to be hand washed separately in cold water, line dried, and cool iron (if needed).

We are heading to see a certain mouseland this year.  This costume will be perfect for our trip.  If you’ve been down there in the past few years you’ll notice the little girls in their princess outfits.  Those outfits in the parks are VERY expensive.  My advice is to buy your princess, fairy, or pirate outfit from Costume Discounters before you head out the door on vacation. Here’s a link to the princess costumes.

These opinions are my own.

Editor’s Note: We do not endorse all of the costumes found on this site to be family-friendly.

St. Patrick’s Day!

I’m far from Irish, but like many other people I will be Irish for a day!  I’ve got my corned beef & cabbage in the slow cooker.  So, join in on the fun!

Who is St. Patrick?

http://familyfun.go.com/st-patricks-day/st-patricks-day-history-971546/
People all over the world celebrate on the 17th day of March in honor of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Some cities have parades, most revelers wear green, and a few families commemorate the day with traditional Irish fare for their meal. However, everyone may not know who St. Patrick is.

Born in Britain during the 4th century, St. Patrick was kidnapped and enslaved by Irish raiders when he was a teenager. Although he was able to escape after six years and become a priest in Britain, he later chose to return to Ireland as a missionary, in order to help spread the teachings of Christianity to pagans. According to Irish folklore, he also used a shamrock to explain the Christian concept of Trinity to the Irish. In spite of continuous opposition from pagan leaders, he continued to evangelize for thirty years while baptizing newly converted Christians and establishing monasteries, churches, and schools. He died on March 17th and was canonized by the local church.

St. Patrick’s Day was first publicly celebrated in Boston in 1737 where a large population of Irish immigrants resided. Nearly 200 years later, the first St. Patrick’s Dayparade in the Irish Free State was held in Dublin in 1931. During the mid 90’s, the Irish government also began a campaign to promote tourism in Ireland on March 17th.

While many Catholics still quietly celebrate this day of religious observance by going to mass, St. Patrick’s Day slowly evolved to become a celebration of Irish heritage. Through the years, along with legendary shamrocks, many symbols were included in festivities that are reflective of Ireland’s folklore, culture, and national identity (think leprechauns, ethnic cuisine, and wearing green).Other places that join in on this celebration include Japan, New Zealand, Argentina, and Canada, along with many cities across the United States.

Here’s a fun family dessert for everyone to help out with also from Family Fun Magazine!  I’ve made them, and they are really cute!   http://familyfun.go.com/st-patricks-day/st-patricks-day-recipes/st-patricks-day-desserts/clover-cupcakes-687369/

Clover Cupcakes

 From FamilyFun Magazine

Clover Cupcakes

It doesn’t take the luck of the Irish to make these St. Patty’s Day treats look so sweet — just a clever baking technique.

Ingredients
  • Cupcake batter
  • Cupcake tins and liners
  • Aluminum foil
  • White frosting
  • Green food coloring
  • Toothpick
  • Green licorice (we used Twizzlers Rainbow Twists sold in a pack with other colors)

Instructions
  1. Place paper liners in 32 standard muffin cups, then fill each halfway with the batter.
  2. Clover Cupcakes - Step 2 For each cupcake, roll three balls of foil (ours were 2/3 inch in diameter) and insert them evenly around the perimeter between the liner and the tin, as shown.
  3. Bake the cupcakes for a few minutes less than the package suggests (because there’s less batter per cup than usual), or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  4. Allow the cupcakes to cool, then remove them from the tin.
  5. Cover each with green frosting (our ratio was 1 teaspoon of green food coloring to one 16-ounce can of white frosting).
  6. Use a toothpick to draw leaf veins, and insert a 2-inch-long piece of green licorice for a stem.

Don’t Forget to Change Your Clocks & Batteries

Spring is coming!  (That groundhog better be right!)

Don’t forget to change your clocks this weekend.  The official time to change your clocks is Sunday the 13th at 2:00 a.m.  Not happening, we are springing our clocks forward early on Saturday night before bed.  Remember  this is also a good time to change the batteries in your smoke & carbon monoxide detectors.

I’m excited about some extra daylight.  Except for one thing……  my daughter.  She’s 2 and these time changes can mess with her head.  So, as much as I’m going to dislike it.  Her wake up call on Sunday will be at 8:00 am (7:00 am in her mind).  My husband and I, well…we will just make more coffee and deal with the grumpy toddler.
