U by Kotex Beginning Period Discussions

The Talk. The Birds and the Bees. Period. Sex. The Passage of Becoming a Woman. Menstrual Cycle. Puberty. Whatever name you have dubbed it, if you have daughters, discussing a woman’s cycle is inevitable. My husband and I basically have three teen daughters (it will be official next year when our third daughter turns 13) in the house. I talked a bit about our beginning period discussions with my daughters here. As much as I hate to admit it, I am an older mom now in my 40’s- don’t feel like it though! 😉 – and know I have moms in their 20’s reading. I am hoping this post will be provide insight or ideas or maybe encouragement to you, especially if your own mother did not model how to go about having period discussions. A lot of moms feel inadequate, don’t we all at some point?

Due to my own mom’s lack of initiative in this area, I actually chose to be quite open and honest with my own children about our bodily functions and God’s purpose for them. From the time my oldest was old enough to know what my maxi pads were, she knew what they were for and where to get them for me if I happen to start and not have any in the bathroom.

I have always waited for my children to ask questions or for the topic of sex, man/woman relationships or periods to come up naturally, unless the opportunity arose that I could bring it up in a natural way. When these issues were discussed, I gave them enough information for their age, the time frame we had and topic of conversation. I found if I talked too much I lost my older daughter, if she asked more questions after a brief response then I tried to answer with more information. For the longest time with one specific question I responded with, “I know you want to know the answer to that but mommy just isn’t ready yet to tell you, but I will when you are older.” That day eventually came and it was as natural as a tea party. Seriously. We were sitting on our bed and it came up and I knew she was ready, I was ready and I think even her sister was there and I told them. There was no awkwardness, not until after the fact when I worried that I might not have explained it as best as I could.

The topics we discussed depended on the girls’ questions and how our conversation evolved. We would cover how much bleeding would happen, what they were to do if they happened to start away from home, where we would keep our supplies, how long a period lasted and probably more I can’t think of.

I actually did give them Maidens by Design to look over, with the intentions of us all doing it together, but we never did. If they had questions, they’d ask after reading it on their own. Maidens by Design is a curriculum for mothers and daughters to work through together or host a class for a group of friends. Just a fun twist on learning about something important in a girl’s life and celebrating becoming a woman. So much of being a woman is not celebrated anymore, especially compared to some countries.

As much as having a period is an inconvenience, there is a greater purpose for it and I want my daughters to recognize that and embrace it rather than grumble and complain about it all the time. This is something I tried to emphasize when having these beginning period discussions.

Old New Car

It’s been a long time since I mentioned anything (fear of judgement) about our car situation. We have been blessed to use my mil’s car since last October when I got side swiped in our 15-passenger van, which insurance wrote off, and my husband decided our mini van was no longer worth fixing. We have gone nowhere as a complete family since October. Amazing really. But do you know what? None of our children have complained. The only thing we really missed is attending church together. That’s not to say no one has been anywhere, we have been creative in taking different children out on errands etc. I am very proud of our children for being so content during this season of our lives.

My mil has been a gem. She usually is anyways. She’s had several health issues preventing her from driving, but got a clean bill of health this past spring because of this we have been anxious to give her car back. She’s only asked to drive once and went back to having my husband drive her on errands, which is fine, he’s happy to do that.

We have just put pressure on ourselves to not take advantage of her benevolence any longer, so we’ve been car hunting in full force. We have been very hesitant to take on a car payment. Never had a car payment in our 18 years of marriage, but felt it was the only way we could do it. We had just found two suburbans on Friday, which my husband stopped to look at yesterday since the car dealer was near our old town.

BUT…a friend from our old church called yesterday. He offered to give us their old 15-passenger van, 11 really since one seat is missing. Wow! Mr. G, a husband and father of 12 – all girls but 1 – and is a contractor with his own business. One of his clients has him doing work in exchange for a work truck. Therefore Mr. G and his family want to GIVE us their old van. An old new car! I never thought God would provide in this way for us. We are in awe that we waited for so long, hesitant to take on a car payment and blown away that we will now have a family vehicle by next weekend. Just a couple things have to be done, the AC needs a new hose, so my husband is going to look at a junk yard and see if he can fix that himself. He’s pretty savvy that way, and if he can’t do it, will give it up to let someone else do the work. We may attend church as a family for the first time in 9 months!

We may still look for a smaller more economical car for my husband to drive to and from work, as we’ve got spoiled with his mom’s car being so good on gas, but we’ll see what happens.

The saying “Good things come to those who wait.” – author unknown – is so true.

So tell me, could you live 9 months without a family vehicle?

Silly Boys Underwear: Wordless Wednesday

Silly boys, silly boys underwear. 🙂 One day last week or the week before my two little boys somehow got baby’s new training pants and look what they did? I think all my children wore underwear on their heads at some point or another. All I can say is goofy!

Have your children worn underwear on their heads? Let me know!

Animals, Cleaning, 4th of July Plans & Monday Motivation

I don’t know where the days go sometimes. It’s July already. It seems like we have been mostly cooped up with the 90 degree temperatures we have had last week and again this week. Hot. Hot. Hot. It’s teaching our children diligence in taking care of the farm animals. Did I tell you we lost our second bunny due to the heat 2-3 weeks ago? The wind picked up that day and ended up knocking over Darth Vader’s cage, we had checked the chickens and due to having checked the bunny earlier after playing with him none of us thought anything of Darth Vader. Well, the children found him and he must have been at death’s door because no means of cooling him down or giving him water revived him. 🙁 We’ve had a farmer friend who has said something to the affect that on a farm there is death. We have certainly found that out fast and furiously. Some of the children want to replace the bunnies and some do not. They’ve started a bunny fund, so we’ll see. We are working on visiting a breeder in the area.

Cleaning

Ever feel like you have to spring clean every day, week or month? I do. Sigh. Over the weekend I scrubbed our dining room carpet and steam vac’d it. It was getting so grungy and dirty. Then I had the children working on their rooms and the play room. Thankfully the girls restored the storage room to neatness last week. So we’ll have lots to give away tomorrow when the “give away” truck comes.

I still have to get at the office yet again due to the children having their laser printer in there for printing off coloring pages and things not getting put away after our last event. It looks like a tornado went through it.

Slowly but surely things are getting cleaned again. It feels so good to organize, now if only we could all get into the habit of daily maintenance maybe things wouldn’t get so out of control!?

4th of July Plans

The 4th of July is only a couple of days away. Our children asked if we could have the “cousins” over and my brother-in-law expressed an interest in coming up to see our pooch and the other animals last week, so we are going to see if they have plans. Nothing like the last minute, that’s my husband’s style. I think we will grill something on our camp stove and I found this yummy looking dessert, I can’t remember what it is called but I pinned it so I could find it easily! It’s a Red Velvet Triffle from Rebecca Parrsons at MomItForward.com

Monday Motivation

This is a rambling Monday Motivation, but my brain is in ramble mode. My motivation this week is to get the living room and hallway carpets cleaned. Makes me fell so good to get the house cleaned and sparkling.

I also have some paper work to do….actually a lot of paper work to do between the businesses and getting something completed for my husband.

I have been watching the new season of Extreme Weight Loss, have never watched it before, but that show is really inspiring. That and watching some food documentaries has made me want to try losing weight again. At least I am motivated to, but as far as a plan of action and execution goes…not sure where I am with all that yet. I may kick off that motivation with a Slique Kit giveaway! So come back tomorrow to check out the giveaway and the final review of the last product!

Tell me how you are keeping your pets cool in the heat? Do you have an cleaning projects you are working on? What are your 4th of July plans? What about weight loss goals? Leave me a comment below to tell me.

Toys for My Boys

In a consumer driven age it’s hard to keep “the stuff” at bay. I have always been one to go through my belongings and get rid of stuff. I can thank my mom for that trait or habit. Our home growing up was never cluttered with stuff and that’s the way I have strived to be, I just have double the people my mom did. It gets tougher when you have eight children, especially when they are home every day. Some of you have the advantage of purging while your kids are at school, I don’t have that luxury. I can’t throw out things they really want to keep, but are useless and take up space. You know all those little trinkets, drawings. They are wonderful but I can’t keep every single one my eight children make or I’d live in paperville! Thankfully, the older my children get the better they are becoming about keeping things to a minimum – that does not mean they are neat about it though!

We have always been on the conservative side of toys too – didn’t want to live in toyville either! So when our children receive toys it is usually something that they have really talked about or we thought they would play with it long term, a figure or little people or an educational toy.

People figures have always been a favorite in our house and something our children never really get tired of playing. Our children recently saw a transformers trailer and so we thought our four year old would enjoy playing with the Transformers Rescue Bot. It is really easy to transform and both our little boys love playing with it. It retails for $12.99.

Here’s a little video with my daughter showing how it works before we let the little boys have it, as I didn’t want to have to hunt for it!

Now my littlest guy gets a kick out of the Playskool Poppin’ Park Squeezn’n Pop lion toy. It’s this little toy lion that has a circle mouth where you can place a ball, then you squeeze and out pops the ball! Junior laughs every time. This is a toy for little ones 18 months and up.

Love these new toys for my boys!

Have your children received any new toys lately? If so, what?
