Vegetable Gardening

Spring is Coming!

I found this great deal for vegetable gardening and it all starts with a bumper sticker.  A bumper sticker?  Yes.  Use this link to the left and get your free bumper sticker!  When you put your information in you’ll receive an email to confirm your email address.  THEN, you’ll get a promo code for 53% off “Seeds of the Month Club“.

Some background – Mike the Gardner Enterprises is located in NJ.  Mike is a 3rd generation home vegetable gardner and author.  Mike has been featured in many publications around the world with articles and tips, including ABC & NBC.

Mike also has a podcast, blog and can be found on Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, LinkedIN, Pinterest, & Google +.

Seeds of the Month Club” –  According to their website.  “All seeds are non-gmo, open pollinated heirloom varieties that have been tested for a germination rate of 90% and higher. ”

“You receive 8 packs of seeds your first month and 4 packages each month thereafter.  With a 30 day money back guarantee.”

With the 53% off it cost $15.06 for the year!   I signed up, so we’ll see what it’s like.  Granted, I don’t know what kind of seeds I’ll receive monthly.  It’s still a great deal!

Happy Growing!

Top Secret Cleaning Techniques From Housekeepers

In case you haven’t already heard, Reader’s Digest is coming out with 13 Top Secret Cleaning Techniques From Housekeepers and I actually learned a couple of new and interesting things. I will say that lemon juice and baking soda are good for tough stains on counters, toilets and sinks, but may leave a baking soda residue depending on how much you use – I haven’t quite got the portion thing down yet.

Boys Bedding – Thrifty Thursday

When we moved and I knew were eventually going to have all four boys in one bedroom (so far the two little boys are content to stay with mommy and daddy!) I hunted down some new bedding for them since theirs was pretty worn out due to all the washing when they were younger. I thought it would be nice for them to have something nice for their new room. They were excited and found something they each liked and to their own particular taste. That was hard by the way because they would keep changing their minds. I really had to keep their vision narrowed down so we could actually get them.

For the two little boys, we went a different route when an ad came up on our homeschool yahoo group. A member in our area was selling two matching Pottery Barn quilts for $10 a piece. They are cute with sale boats on them and I thought they were perfect (without even seeing them!) I had purchased some Breyer horses from the same lady last Christmas for one of our younger daughters, so I trusted her when she said they were in great shape and they are! Take a look…

Make Your Own Cosmetics – Thrifty Thursday

A friend sent me a link to a website this week because she thought I would like, which led me to www.MakeYourCosmetics.com I do not use a lot of cosmetics, however, I do like to use organic as much as I can. I never really thought of making my own before. I have heard of the kits available to reuse the leftover lipstick in lipstick tubes, but have never actually bought one.

Anyhow, MakeYourCosmetics.com offers a variety of recipes and lots of great tips! Enjoy exploring the idea of making your own cosmetics.

Fall Canning and Apple Picking Photos

Thrifty Thursday is all about canning and finding ways to provide good food for our families. Canning can be expensive, but if you are going to do it for the long haul then the initial investment is worth it. I bought canning supplies back in 2001 and we have only used them a handful of times until this year. Friends have been good to us providing produce and jars.

Apple picking. Check local orchards, neighbors who do nothing with the apples just falling to the ground in their yards and gleaning programs set up by non-profit organizations and farm partnerships. This applies to other fruits and vegetables too. We do this not only for ourselves but to provide local food pantries with fresh fruits and veggies – the ones that take them anyways.

This is actually fermenting sauerkraut and it is a before photo as I think it was a failed first attempt….maybe….haven’t tasted it yet to know for sure. Kind of scared to and you’ll know why by the next photo. A friend told me it should be fine, but I still have my doubts….

And here is one of the second batch with the first batch….notice the difference in coloring:

This is our stash of some of our canned tomatoes. We also have salsa, jam and applesauce. We are planning to make more applesauce tomorrow with two families. We will have three moms and 24 kids…..thankfully we will have a few over the age of 16! Plus some other young ladies helping equal the number above age 12!

Gleaning often means taking the leftovers that have fallen to the ground and are not perfect. However, they are perfect for canning and dehydrating.

Apple picking/gleaning is also a wonderful way to spend a beautiful day together as a family.

Happy Thrifty Thursday!

Easy Ways To Have Fun This Summer!

Summer is here! And most of you are on a budget. So here is a list of cheap ways to have fun with your kids this summer.

Visit a park-

Local parks are free and provide your children with entertainment while you and your spouse/partner can talk.

Visit a local lake-

We have several free local lakes in our area. Take advantage of these!

Use coupons-

If you find a fun family outing such as a water park try to find some coupons to use to cut back on costs.

Cut back on spending-

Cut back on your spending this summer. Grow your own garden veggies. Make your own prepared foods. Don’t buy your meals make them!

Cut back on junk food-

Junk food isn’t as cheap as it seems! Bottled water is just as cheap as soda, and organic snacks are becoming more and more cheaper. Buy these instead of fat and high-fructose saturated snacks.

Just stay home-

Instead of going out alot this summer just stay home! Play in your pool, go for a bike ride, take walks, play games, garden together, and just have fun as a family!

Happy summer!
