Part 2 of 2 of the Lemon, Thyme and Peppermint Series

This is the second part of a two part series, the first part was shared last week here. This series contains infomation from Dr. Jean Valnet, MD, the well-known French medical researcher and essential oil expert, which appeared in BIOTECH News. Debra Raybern’s comments are preceded by the initials DR.

Oregano and Other Super Oils

In his book, The Practice of Aromatherapy, Jean Valnet describes how oil of oregano is potent enough to sterilize sewage water! In 1995 Greek researchers at the University of Thessaloniki discovered that a 1/4000 dilution of fresh wild oil of oregano sterilized septic water.

Even in very watered down concentrations oil of oregano has been found to be “extremely bactericidal” in its action against 8 strains of bacteria including E coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus. At Cornell University research has shown it was effective against 30 different germs.

A University of Tennessee study found oil of oregano to be useful against 9 different harmful food borne microbes. In Holland scientists found that carvacrol, one of oregano’s components, did an excellent job in inhibiting food borne Bacillus bacteria.

DR NANCY SNYDERMAN (VO) Noble was experimenting with bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus. Staph is a very common bacterium that lives on our skin and generally causes no trouble. But if it gets into the bloodstream, say through a cut or surgery, staph can very quickly damage the heart, lungs, brain, or poison the entire system. Staph is also very easily spread by touch. It’s found on doors, handrails, counter tops, you name it. What made Noble’s strain of staph so extraordinary, so frightening, was that it was resistant to the most potent antibiotic in existence, a drug called vancomycin.

“Oil pressed from oregano leaves that contain the active ingredient carvacrol may be an effective treatment against sometimes drug-resistant bacterial infection. Georgetown University researchers have found that oil of oregano appears to reduce infection “as effectively as traditional antibiotics.” Oil of oregano at relatively low doses was found to be efficacious against Staphylococcus bacteria and was comparable in its germ-killing properties to antibiotic drugs such as streptomycin, penicillin and vancomycin.” [Science Daily 10/11/2001]

The findings were presented by Harry G. Preuss, MD, professor of physicology and biophysics, Georgetown University, at the American College of Nutrition’s annual meeting in Orlando, Florida.

Super charged essential oils:

1. Oil from thyme: Destroys the anthrax bacillus, the typhoid bacillus, the glanders bacillus, staphylococcus, the diptheria bacillus, meningococcus, and Koch’s.
2. Essence of Lemon: Neutralize the meningococcus, typhus bacillus, pneumococcus, staphylococcus aureus and hemolytic streptococcus. Neutralizes the typhus bacillus, staphylococcus and the diphtheric bacillus
3. BLEND: pine, thyme, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, cloves, cinnamon: Antieptic effect of a blend of essential oils—including pine, thyme, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, cloves and cinnamon was studied in order to test the ability of the oils to purify the air of harmful disease-causing bacteria, and many forms of bacteria —INCLUDING Staphylococcus aureus.
4. Peppermint: Improve mental acuity and alertness, vanquish fatigue, soothe the respiratory system, relieve nausea, fever and vomiting, and quickly put a stop to acid indigestion and heartburn. It kills intestinal parasites, staphylococcus and tuberculosis bacillus. Inhalant for the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, and sinusitis.
5. BLEND: Eucalyptus, clove, lemon cinnamon rosemary: dramatically inhibit the growth of many forms of bacteria—INCLUDING Staphylococcus aureus.
6. Oil of oregano: Potent enough to sterilize sewage water! It is “extremely bactericidal” against 8 strains of bacteria including E Coil, Salmonella and Staphylococcus. Reduces infection “as effectively as traditional antibiotics and exhibited the greatest antibacterial action against common pathogenic germs such as Staph, E. Coil and Listeria.

Ummm….Hmmm….Monday Motivation

Ummm….hmmm….Monday Motivation? I have to say that I am not feeling very motivated at the moment. I have worked all day, so yes, I have been motivated. I am just not feeling motivated now. Not sure what is motivating me for the week, except that as always I have a lot to do. The nice thing is my family allowed me some down time for Mother’s Day to have some quiet time to read. 2 books down…..a few more to go. Not sure my down time motivated me even though it gave me a jump start on upcoming book reviews. I am just tired (and no I’m not pregnant!)

This week I have two days at the farm, co-op and other work to do in addition to homeschooling. Not sure this Monday Motivation is working this week, just making me tired thinking about it all and before my week gets underway. (ha!)

So tell me what are you up to this week?

I am off to watch Treasures of the Snow with the children while my husband is on a conference call, which he will need the laptop for since we will have the desktop occupied.

Enjoy your evening!

Kid’s and Healthy Eating

Although our family is in process, we really do try to eat plenty of fruits and veggies. Our problem is keeping those growing tummies full! Our boys are always coming to me saying, “I’m hungry!” So we do provide them with lots of carbs too because they are very slim and do not seem to have an issue with weight control at all! Just like their daddy, they will be tall and thin.

If you want to help your child eat more balanced, healthier meals….then here is something that might be a tool to get them motivated to eat those veggies. It’s a children’s plate that is sectioned to promote the recommendation of half their meal fruits and vegetables!  This plate is perfect for a  5 year old (maybe even the 10 year old.. since the creator’s 10 year old still eats on it!  Not sure my children over 5 would since they associate it with a “baby plate”) Parents, grandparents, health departments, hospitals, and children’s diabetes programs have all purchased plates and found them to be helpful at home and in their practice.

We received one, but I have to be honest we have not used it yet! I have had it in my review pile on the desk and was saving it for baby to use. It is a typical child’s plate and will wash up well. However, it is melamine ware, which is BPA free, lead free and perfectly safe to use in the dishwasher. It is not microwavable though.

This plate is brightly colored and attracts the attention of small children with its fun design. Love the little strawberry, don’t you? Sturdy little plate.

***Closed***Buddy Fruits Review & Giveaway

Our family tries really hard to watch our eating habits. We read labels and purchase organic, all natural, locally grown food as much as possible. We also do not buy a lot of convenience foods. Usually our convenience foods are a treat for trips or day outings. We bake and cook from scratch, unless our food co-op has some nice quick meals for those nights we just do not want to cook or have a busy day and need something quick and easy. If you are  a mom who looks for all natural snacks, without preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, GMOs or lots of sugar, dyes and additives, then Buddy Fruits is a cute little snack option for your children.

We took our Buddy Fruits on our trip to Minnesota a couple of weeks ago and we loved them. There are five flavors for their pure blended fruits, which is a little pouch with a plastic screw top and pretty much like pureed fruit. This is a great solution for children with small appetites and cannot finish their snack in one sitting. Simply screw the top on and a little later when their tummy is hungry they can finish off their Buddy Fruit. The five flavors include Apple & Multifruit, Apple & Banana, Apple & Cinnamon, Apple & Strawberry, Mango Passion & Banana. The only one some of the children were not crazy over was the Mango.

I loved the ease of use, the lack of spills or need of spoons for these snacks while traveling. Even baby could eat them right from the package! Little bit messy for him, but it still was easy to feed him while on the road.

Here’s the ingredients from the Apple & Multifruit:

Apple, banana, passion fruit juice, mango, strawberry, concentrated apple juice.

That’s it.

The other Buddy Fruit snacks are pure fruit bites. Very similar to gummies, BUT they are ALL fruit! No added anything. They come in four flavors: Orange, Pomegranate & Acai, Apple and Raspberry. Can you say yummy! They were another hit. These are not listed on Buddy Fruits’ website but are available on Amazon, as are the blended Buddy Fruits.

Here’s what is in the Raspberry pure fruit bites:

Fruits extract, apple juice concentrate, apple puree concentrate, raspberry juice concentrate, lemon juice concentrate, fruit pectin, glazing agent.

And it says it may contain traces of wheat starch.

A huge two thumbs up from our family on Buddy Fruits. I am hoping to stock up for our trips to the farm this summer for something easy to take with us on the run.

Fair Food Network – Grow the Good

Found this newsletter in my inbox and since the Fair Food Network is new to me, as it Oran Hesterman’s new book, I thought I’d share it with all of you.

Fair Food Network: Grow the Good
Dear Friends,

As Oran’s wife, I want to share with you my excitement about the upcoming publication of his book, Fair Food: Growing a Healthy, Sustainable Food System for All.   Over the past decades, I have experienced (first hand and daily!) his passionate commitment to transforming our broken food system, and I am remarkably proud of the many ways he has found to make an impact.Fair Food: Growing a Healthy, Sustainable Food System for All

As a Professor of Agronomy and Extension Specialist at Michigan State University, he traveled the state working directly with farmers to create more sustainable farming systems.  As a Program Director at the Kellogg Foundation, he traveled the country seeding the local good food movement with resources, ideas, and connections. Aware of the profound challenges inherent in redesigning the broken food system, he founded FairFood Network to address these issues, particularly in under-served communities, and continues to spread  the fair food movement nationwide.

And all of his dedication, knowledge, experience and passion has been channeled into this book, Fair Food, which powerfully presents a blueprint for change and a roadmap for how to get us  there.

I unabashedly recommend this book to you, knowing that it is truly a labor of love and devotion to the fair food future we all want for our children and future generations.

Best,
Lucinda Kurtz

Kim and Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels

What kinds of treats does your family enjoy? Pretzels are a nice snack to have on occasion. I actually prefer the breaded pretzels over the ones in the chip aisle. Our children love this pretzel roll that I pick up at our food co-op, whereas they are not my favorites. Last week we had the chance to review some yummy pretzels from Kim and Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels. The difference between Kim and Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels and others is the fact they are stuffed.

Our Sample Kit included six 2-packs of Stuffed Pretzels:

– Grilled Cheese

This stuffed pretzel was simply yummy! It tasted so delicious and cheesy.

– Pizza

Can we just say YUM? Our family loves pizza and this pretzel was a hit in our home! It tasted almost exactly like pizza. The sauce was very good with just the right spices. And the pretzel itself…well, it was very good.

– Apple Cinnamon

Apple Cinnamon was also was very good. Are you noticing a trend here? 😉 It would make a very good breakfast treat. The apples where nice and soft and the sauce was sweet, but not overly sweet. And everyone in our family loved it!

– Chocolate Crumb

Chocolate lovers will love this pretzel, as it was one of our favorites out of all the ones that we tried! It tasted SO good. The pretzel was SO moist and chewy. And who could resist??? It’s chocolate, right???? Plus, the chocolate frosting was a added bonus. All of us loved this pretzel!

– Cheddar Jalapeño

Only our two eldest daughters and I really liked the jalapeño pretzels. The others thought that they where too hot and spicy. They were tasty and had a nice kick to them. The cheddar cheese really accented the jalapeño. This one was not my personal favorite but I’d eat it in a pinch.

We heated our pretzels up in the oven for 15-25 minutes. Our overall experience with these stuffed pretzels is one word – Yum! Our mouths still watering when we see pictures/think of these pretzels! 🙂

All in all we LOVE Kim and Scott’s gourmet pretzels and want to order some more of these yummy treats soon! Now that I have tried a stuffed pretzel, they are truly the ultimate pretzel of all time. Other pretzels dim in comparison to them.

Be sure to tcheck out heir products on their website: http://www.kimandscotts.com

About Kim and Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels-

In addition, their pretzels can be found at Barnes & Noble, and via regular appearances on QVC, where they sold more than 150,000 pretzels in just 12 minutes when they debuted on the network.

Each one of our delicious pretzels is twisted by hand and made from scratch. Kim & Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels offer an assortment of amazing pretzels, using ALL-NATURAL and PREMIUM ingredients, like freshly shredded cheeses, hearty spices, unbleached flour and whole grains.
