Congratulations to Tami for winning our Shari’s Berries giveaway!

Mmm….chocolate and berries? What could be better? Shari’s Berries is a online company that sells yummy chocolate covered berries and other yummy goodies.

My Review:

We were sent a very a couple of fabulous treats from Shari’s Berries to review. I let my daughter pick out something special for me in honor of Mother’s Day and she chose the deliciousdelicious mini cheesecakes (Rocky Road, Classic New York, and White Chocolate) as well as 12 chocolate covered strawberries – white chocolate, milk chocolate and dark chocolate, as well as lots of other not-so-good ingredients. But hey, this was for a special occasion, just early!

Berries-

When we first saw these strawberries we thought that they were HUGE! And they are! We loved them. They were SO yummy! They were chocolate-y, juicy, and oh-so sweet! They taste SO good! I was nice and shared them. 🙂

Cheesecake-

At our house we love cheesecake, it is a rare dessert these days. Mostly on birthdays or Father’s Day when my husband requests it. We thought that the Shari’s Berries pictures made them look a little small, but in reality they were quite big for “mini” cheesecakes. We enjoyed them all! They were so rich and yummy. A perfect cheesecake in our mind! (Are we saying yummy enough?)

Shari’s Berries ships very fast and sells wonderful strawberries covered in chocolate for mom or anyone else on your gift list! (or yourself!)

Discount Just for YOU-

Entering BERRYGOOD at checkout will give you a 15% discount, and liking Shari’s Berries on facebook with instantly give you a 20% discount code.

And guess what? You have a little over two days to enter this giveaway. We will close it on Thursday night like the others and let the winner know by Friday morning, hopefully giving you enough time to order for Mother’s Day.

Lemon, Thyme and Peppermint: Part 1 of 2

This is a two part series with infomation from Dr. Jean Valnet, MD, the well-known French medical researcher and essential oil expert, which appeared in BIOTECH News. Debra Raybern’s comments are preceded by the initials DR:

Dr. Jean Valnet, MD, the well-known French medical researcher and essential oil expert, points out that the essential oil from thyme literally destroys the anthrax bacillus, the typhoid bacillus, the glanders bacillus, staphylococcus, the diphtheria bacillus, meningococcus, and Koch’s bacillus, which is the bacteria responsible for tuberculous lesions!

DR: The oil blend Longevity and the Longevity capsules both contain thyme oil. Thyme oil itself is 15 cents per drop. Thyme oil was also tested and found to be protective of the fats in the brain from turning rancid, which researchers believe is a contributor to Alzheimer’s and senile dementia.

BIOTECH: He further points out, “The essence of lemon is second to none in its antiseptic and bactericidal properties. The works of Morel and Rochaix have demonstrated that the vapors of lemon essence alone will neutralize the meningococcus in 15 minutes, the typhus bacillus in less than an hour, pneumococcus in one to three hours, staphylococcus aureus in two hours and hemolytic streptococcus in three to twelve hours. Applied directly, the essential oil itself neutralizes the typhus bacillus and staphylococcus in only five minutes and the diphtheric bacillus in just 20 minutes.”

DR: Are you drinking a few drops of lemon in your water daily? A most inexpensive way to protect yourself and family. At six cents per drop, you can’t get better protection.

BIOTECH: In tests conducted in France by Professor Griffon, Director of the French Police Toxicology Laboratory, the antiseptic effect of a blend of essential oils—including pine, thyme, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, cloves and cinnamon—was studied in order to test the ability of the oils to purify the air of harmful disease-causing bacteria. First, Professor Griffon set up a number of Petri dishes approximately 15cm from ground level in an open room, allowing them to stand for 24 hours, the germs from the air being collected naturally as they settled into the open Petri dishes. After 24 hours he analyzed the dishes, finding them to contain 210 colonies of various microbes, including numerous molds and staphylococci. He then sprayed the mixture of essential oils in the form of an aerosol into the air in the room. After only 15 minutes, only 14 colonies of microorganisms out of the original 210 were left alive. After 30 minutes, only FOUR colonies of the original 210 were left. Importantly, ALL of the potentially harmful disease-causing molds and staphylococci had been killed within the first 30 minutes, 3)

DR: Rosemary, clove and cinnamon are all ingredients in the Thieves oil and line of products. I hope you are using these daily for personal care and household cleaning.

BIOTECH: Peppermint–Known to dramatically and rapidly improve mental acuity and alertness, vanquish fatigue, soothe the respiratory system, relieve nausea, fever and vomiting, and quickly put a stop to acid indigestion and heartburn. It also kills intestinal parasites, as well as staphylococcus, the tuberculosis bacillus, and numerous other pathogenic microorganisms. When diffused, it purifies the air and water. Peppermint is also often used as an inhalant for the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, and sinusitis, and is known for its pain relieving properties.

DR: The medical community may be at a loss when it comes to fighting some of our most potent germs, but God isn’t. He gave us essential oils. In their purest, non-adulterated, properly distilled, expertly harvested, natural and most potent form (this rules out all but Young Living), we can have the protection from these germs and be able to fight them off in most cases.

In 1996 Weber State University Annual Research Report, they cite 19 oils which displayed a 100% kill rate against T7 phage, and three oils which displayed a 100% kill rate against Staphylococcus aureus phage. The Thieves oil blend was also test and shown to have a 99.96% kill rate for airborne bacteria. Dr. Close, environmental scientist specializing in mold remediation, proved that the Thieves Oil Blend killed mold, including the black mold when diffused.

In a world filled with so much disease, it is this kind of information that should make Young Living essential oils a matter of FIRST IMPORTANCE to you and your family. They could literally save your life one day.

Thanks to Debra Raybern, N.D., M.H., C.N.C., I.C.A. (Naturopath, Master Herbalist, Certified Nutrition Counselor, Internationally Certified Aromatherapist) is the founder of Sharing Great Health, Inc. with nearly two decades of personal and professional experience in helping families regain and maintain optimum health through natural health and wellness solutions. We are a part of her downline in our Young Living business and she’s coming to Chicago this summer! We are excited for the opportunity to learn from her.

* CLOSED* Planting Time: Week 4 and Final Giveaway of the Scott Naturals 4-Week Test Drive

Winner of Week 3 Scott Naturals 4-Week Test Drive Giveaway is……….

Erica!!!!!!!!! Congratulations!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to all who entered and to Scott Naturals and TheMotherhood for sponsoring this giveaway! Erica was chosen because she was the only one to enter.

Please note this week’s giveaway ends on  our usual Thursday night instead of the weekend due to having to get next week’s giveaway winner’s info in by next Friday, May 6th!

Sorry, I battled a headache yesterday and was out all day on Saturday. Then today had school stuff to deal with so I am posting this really late.

Planting Time

I don’t know about your area but here it has been pretty wet and raining for most of April. So much so that it hindered our organic farmer from getting much into the ground. May looks a little more promising so the next two days, if the weather cooperates, we will be working full speed ahead on planting all those transplants we planted in March in the greenhouse. I am looking forward to being outside and getting more active (walked a couple of times over the weekend and today…yay!)

We do not plan to plant too much here at home since my work at the farm is entitling us to two CSA (Consumer Supported Agriculture) boxes of fresh organic produce each week. However, if we manage to get our perennials moved around, the children may plant a seed of their choice. We do have blueberry bushes, strawberries, raspberries and rhubarb that should return, as well as oregano and chives. So that is quite a bit in our small garden plots. I am sure the raspberries and strawberries will need thinning. Sure wish we had more land so we could plant them in bigger plots!

Feel free to tell me in your comment what you are planting in your gardens this year, if you are planting one.

Week 3 Winner

Winner of Week 3 Scott Naturals 4-Week Test Drive Giveaway is……….

Starting on April 4, as part of the “Take the 4-Week Test Drive Sweepstakes,” Scott Naturals began challenging Americans to test out its line of hybrid paper products for four weeks and enter for a chance to win a new hybrid sedan.

Our Review of Scott Naturals Paper Napkins

This will be very similar to last week’s review of Scott Naturals paper towel in that we were satisfied with the performance of Scott Naturals paper napkins. They are comparable to other brands we have used.  They function well when used for cleaning.  They do not seem to tear too easily.

Overall we are very satisfied with Scott Naturals paper napkins.

Motivation Mondays are Back!

I have been off my posting schedule a bit lately and wanted to get back on track or at least try to. We have been extremely busy around here, but that is nothing new as we are always going to be busy with such a large family.

We have had a lot of rain. Basically April was cold, wet and dreary. I did not get to the farm very often since the fields were too wet to do anything. The day we did get out there we measured the field off and transplanted and planted more seeds. Last week I helped Mrs. A and her husband take down old cattle fencing that we are going to use for trellising vegetables. I am very interested to see how she is going to use them. It took us about two hours to take down 20 cattle panels. I took the boys, who played with the owner’s son. Go-Go Boy sat in his stroller until he started fussing for me, then it was into my Ergo on my back where he promptly fell asleep.

So I am really looking forward to getting out to the field to plant! Hopefully soon.

We keep our eyes open for available farm land and are still hoping that the farm incubator will be able to accept us in the fall, but just in case we want to have a Plan B.

My husband’s work van is acting up so we have been in the process of deciding whether or not it is worth fixing. It is is a 1995 Ford Windstar that we have owned since 1999. We replaced the transmission about three years ago, it has other little issues and a missing fender, but it has been a great little van for us. We know the van and it has served us well. If we buy another used car we don’t know what mechanical problems we will be inheriting. Kwim? (Turned out the van just needed a rest….remember it is old and temper-mental. It enjoyed some transmission fluid and a rest. But the trans is still slipping so we may eventually revisit this topic at some point.)

***

Friday I had to drive my husband to and from work. Since he works so close to the Botanical Gardens, we decided after we picked him up we would visit the gardens. The magnolias were in bloom, as were hyacinths, daffodils, rhododendrons were started and so were some azaleas. The tulips were up but not in blooms. I so want to go back to see all of them opened! What a picture that will be! Every time we passed the sweet scent of a magnolia tree, I just breathed it in. There is something to be said about aromatherapy. Of course our camera battery needed charging and our phones were full so we could not get any photos! What an April with very few photos taken. 🙁

This week holds catching up from an Earth Day celebration we attended over the weekend, hopefully getting to the farm and doing some work around the house. House projects are plentiful and there is never enough time to just focus on those things. They seem to be pushed aside more easily than other tasks.

Priorities are: working on school work with the children, exercising and hopefully some work around the house come the weekend.

What are yours this week?

Cranes for a Cure

If you had an extra dollar, how would you spend it right now?

Ok, not that you thought about it for a moment I want you to consider a different way to spend that dollar because it will be much better spent. Yes, I know for sure it will be. Not only that but you will be inspired.  There is a little 9 year old little girl and she’s got on a mission. Children have so much heart if  adults had half the heart the world would indeed be a much better place! Read more to see exactly what she is up to…

9 Year Old Lizzie  With a Word About Cranes for a Cure

Cranes

So I guess you want to know what Cranes 4 a Cure is.

It is said that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish. Sometimes relatives or friends fold the cranes for someone who has an illness in hopes for recovery or a long life. My goal is to raise $1,000.00. For every dollar I raise, I am going to make an origami crane and put the name of the person who sent me that dollar on the wing.

Then I am going to string all the cranes together and give it to the juvenile diabetes foundation with all the money I raise. Then my wish will be to find a cure.

Please help me help those kids with this bad disease. My mommy says she will take a picture of every crane I make and post it here for everyone to see. For more information, please email my mommy, her name is Jenny. A dollar isn’t a lot, but it can make a difference.

Thank you,

Lizzie

If you  share Lizzie’s website and fundraiser with your blog readers or others, she would love to know about it!

Our Cherub – Wordless Wednesday

Like Go-Go Boy’s little “beaver” face? He is teething. He’s got two of his top four teeth in and has been making this face. He only has one on the bottom gum with three more to go. Well, we all know he has more than that but those are the bumps we see working their way through right now. He is usually as happy as he is in these photos, but has some cranky times too.

He’s our only child that got both my dimples. You would think of eight children more of them would have got them, but a couple others only got one! Isn’t that different?

So much for Wordless Wednesday! 😉

*CLOSED* Week 3 Giveaway of Scott Naturals 4-Week Test Drive!

Congratulations to Tamara for winning the Week 3 giveaway for Scott Naturals 4-Week Test Drive!

Thanks to all who entered and to Scott Naturals and TheMotherhood for sponsoring this giveaway! #12 winner chosen by Random.org.

Please note this week’s giveaway ends on Saturday night instead of Sunday night this week due to having to get next week’s giveaway winner’s info in by next Friday, May 6th!

Green Cleaning

Over the years of our journey to using safer, green products in our home, I have eliminated many of the chemical products in our home – going back to using what many of our grandmothers and maybe even mothers used. I do not remember my mother using very many chemical based cleaning products in our home growing up, now that I think about it.

Now, we use the basics of soap, water, baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice and thieves cleaner. This not only saves us money but is better for health.

Hot soapy water is enough to clean most things, it is usually the tougher stains that need a little more to get surfaces or floors clean, and a bit of muscle behind your scrub brush.

Baking Soda is an abrasive substance and is very good at scrubbing out dirt and grim with either vinegar or lemon juice. We can get strawberry stains out of the counter tops with lemon juice and baking soda. This is also a good way to clean the tub and grout around the tub tiles, floor or toilet. Plus baking soda is a deodorizer too.

Thieves Cleaner is a green cleaner. As many of you know we have used thieves cleaner and essential oils since discovering mold in our home (if you do not know this story click on the tab at the top of the page that says, “Health Scents”). We continue to use it because we like it. It smells good and is safe for even the children to use. Plus it is effective in hindering the growth of mold. I use it to clean our mirrors, windows, floors, walls, sinks, and tub. It also gets out some stains if used in its concentrated form. Not to mention the fact that I should be using it around my window sills where condensation collects during the winter months, but have been rather slack this year. 🙁

Essential Oils. We diffuse essential oils in our home to purify the air and for the aromatherapy.

Vinegar. I you happen to be one of those people who do not like the smell of vinegar or how it makes your home smell…join the club! You can mix a couple of drops of your favorite essential oils in with the vinegar to give it a better aroma.

God wants us to take care of what He has blessed us with the land, our earthly possessions and our families. Therefore, it is important to choose cleaning products that are not only good for the earth but for our the health of our families too.

Our Review of Scott Naturals Paper Towels

We were satisfied with the performance of Scott Naturals paper towels. They are comparable to other brands we have used. Scott Naturals are fairly thick and absorbent. They function well when used for cleaning.  They do not seem to tear too easily. However, they have a pretty rough texture to use for napkins (if you have ever done that when you have ran out of regular paper napkins!) or to wipe a child’s face while dry, but are fine if moistened a bit.

Overall we are very satisfied with Scott Naturals paper towels.

Happy Belated Easter!

For those of you who observe religious holidays, happy belated Easter! In recent years we have been keeping our celebrations simple because it is easier – church, maybe grandma’s and relaxing at home. I pretty much stayed off the computer over the weekend and forgot to do up an Easter post other than the one I wrote up earlier and the chick one, which I could have included a Happy Easter message within, but didn’t. So I hope you had a very blessed Easter weekend.

Colored Chicks

Friends in Canada forwarded us a cute email that I want to share with all of you, as I have never heard of this before. Sorry I cannot credit the photos or the ranch, but am sure a google search would turn up where this originated. (I didn’t find much but did find a YouTube video.) As cute as they are I do wonder at the concern others have voiced over the issue of coloring them, the care of them when folks take them home but they get to be full grown etc. What do you all think?

Colored Chicks (from email forward)

They live on a ranch in Durango CO and have 900 baby chicks. Every year, for Easter, they inject the eggs with food coloring, and when they hatch, they are brilliant with color. She uses, pink, purple, orange, green, pink, red, turquoise etc. They aren’t hurt by the process, and as they grow, they return to their normal colors. I’ve never seen anything so cute in my life. Wouldn’t you just love to grab a handful of these little puff balls?
