New Home, Chickens and Turkeys

It’s been an interesting weekend. Half of our family went to Mr. C’s farm to help process his broilers (meat chickens) yesterday, while the rest of us remained at home. The crew that went to Mr. C’s had a full day of catching chickens, cleaning the innards out, plucking feathers, helping get the barn ready for a load of hay as well as helping Mr. C’s daughter with her chores. Everyone came home tired but pretty happy, had learned a lot and were excited about farming and expanding our fledgling farm.

New Home

Upon returning they also brought a new home for our laying hens. It’s bigger, can hold 25, but I think we have 27 in it. It has 8 nesting boxes, which is a blessing since our hens should start laying any day now. We are anxiously awaiting for the arrival of their yummy fresh eggs. As it was, today when Mr. C came to pick up the trailer he brought us two chickens that had not been picked up yesterday and we ate them today. I don’t think I have ever eaten meat that fresh, I mean it’s barely a day old. At least not since I was a kid when my parents bought fresh pork and beef from friends who were local farmers. That’s just how it was done. Back to the chicken, it was so moist and flavorful. The most delicious chicken I have ever tasted. Seriously. And all we did was roast it in the oven. We didn’t do anything fancy with it. All I can say is I can’t wait to raise our own broilers next year and have a freezer full for our family.

The new moveable chicken coop isn’t anything fancy. We had to clean it out a bit before putting new shavings in the nesting boxes. The coop is actually modeled after Joel Salatin’s, who is the owner of Polyface Farms in Virginia. He’s written several books that we highly recommend, even if you aren’t a farmer. He is very entertaining. Our girls love his books and have read some of them more than once.

Of course, what’s living on a farm without a trailer ride….(and yes, after the photo was taken I was on the trailer with the children)

Today we moved the hens into their new home. I did not get photos of them all moved in. I’ll try to remember to add some tomorrow. It was a little nerve wrecking to put three breeds of chickens together. They’ve been all in separate coops since they’ve been outside. Our hens are beautiful. They are healthy. They don’t have missing feathers. So to see the roosters and a couple of hens establishing pecking order was a little new to me. Thankfully it was established within seconds and not one chicken was hurt.

Chickens and Turkeys

We love our Buff Orpingtons. They are sweet hens. Though the rooster showed a different side when he charged at my oldest daughter last night. First time that’s happened and let’s just say that I let our pup to teach him a lesson. No blood, but definitely a fright. No rooster is going to attack my children. We didn’t kill him or allow the dog to kill him, though I was sorely tempted too. He has another chance because he is good to the hens but if he ever does it again, I’ll enjoy seeing him on a platter now that half the family knows how to butcher a chicken.

Our poor chickens and turkeys had quite the night last night. We went out to feed them this morning and found feathers near every coop. Then we noticed our largest turkey had blood on its neck and the chicken wired bowed out on one side of the coop. We believe a predator actually got into their coop and bless that big turkey for saving all of them. We had to staple down the chicken wire to make it more secure. We hope to sell half our turkeys, keep three to eat and keep two to mate and raise our own turkeys. That’s the plan right now. My husband actually sold one turkey yesterday to one of the other guys processing chickens…and he says he’s not a salesman!

We still have to figure out winter housing for the chickens and the two turkeys we intend to keep, thankfully we have a bit more time to do so. So many things to do and so little time…

Fellowes Laminator Video Review

As a homeschooling mom, I have had projects over the years that needed laminating but I was rather frugal and settled for a roll of contact paper and a pair of scissors. It worked great for the first set of flash cards I made of the alphabet and numbers for our girls, but as the babies arrived and I became busier with children, the extra time I once had to sit and cut diminished, a laminator would have come in very handy.

Fellowes Laminator

The Fellowes Saturn2 95 Laminator is very small and compact. It doesn’t take up much space at all. A definite plus as I don’t have a lot of flat surface to store that and our printer. Right now it’s stored beneath my little table/desk, but we used it at the dining room table. It is also lightweight so moving from room to room it isn’t an issue at all.

The laminator came with 3 packages of laminating pouches 25 – 9 x 11.5 hot laminating pouches, 25 – 4.5 x 6.25 pouches and then 10 other laminating pouches, which I haven’t figure out what to use for yet. We used the smaller size to laminate a few farm stand signs for selling produce.

How it Works

The Fellowes Saturn2 95 is very easy to use. My girls have used it successfully. You simply put the item you want laminated between the pages of the laminating pouch and you slide it in the opening and wait for it to come out the other side fully laminated. Simple as that.

Laminator Review

We love it. It is going to be a great addition to our office equipment enabling us to laminate flash cards for the kids or signs for our businesses. There’s a photo story of how we laminated market signs above. I am pleased with the laminating results but not the type setting of the words. Those were off. But hey, it was our first time and nothing is ever perfect the first time around, right? Video review is below:

As for the laminating machine? It’s definitely a keeper. Wish I had it 15 years ago when I spent hours making our first flash cards.

Two thumbs up from me!

Brandcation Blog Cabin #Brandcation

This is a post that I have been meaning to write since May when I signed up but I kept bumping it for everything else on my plate since that time. Now less than a month away, I need to get it written. I simply cannot believe how fast time has flown. Back in May I went to Brandcation (#3) Bloggers Gone Coastal in Pensacola, Florida, it was my first blogger conference-type-event. I loved meeting bloggers I interact with on a daily basis on MomDot. They are wonderful! I had a great time. Though I missed my family, I would be lying if I said it wasn’t refreshing to get away.

That’s why when Brandcation (#4) Blog Cabin was announced in late May, I really wanted to go and was very surprised my husband quickly agreed I should. I was like, “Really?” I never expected him to say yes so fast because he really missed me while I was at Brandcation Bloggers Gone Coastal. My older girls called him “pathetic” and said he “moped” around the house carrying and looking at his phone for my next text or call. I thought it was pretty cute actually. 😉 He loves me, he loves me! He missed me, he missed me! So juvenille, lol! (If you find this edited later, you’ll know my husband did not approve it! 🙂 ) I really thought I’d have to do some cajoling to convince him it was a good thing for me. I was wrong. He’s a good hubby and knows I work hard.

About Brandcation

Brandcation is not like other blogging conferences. It is small, intimate and full of fun activities for bloggers to get to know each other while supporting sponsored brands. It is the ultimate networking event! Relationships is what Brandcation is all about. To learn more about the past three Brandcations go here. As a side note, Brandcation is presented by MomDot and Brandfluential. Thanks Trisha and Kim (plus Blondie and Lynsey too!)

Brandcation Blog Cabin

Brandcation Blog Cabin is being hosted in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and we will be visiting some area attractions. Those attractions include:

Cabin Fever Vacations (accommodations)
Dollywood
Dixie Stampede show
Country Tonight
Lumberjack Feud
Titanic Museum
Climb Works for Ziplining
Wax museum
Flashy Blinky Lights

We will even be having an 80’s party. I was a teen in the 80’s so that oughta be fun to try and find something to wear. I have looked but I didn’t like anything I saw, but then again while looking I was trying to find something that I could and would wear today…

Once again I am nervous, even though I have met a number of the bloggers attending, but really looking forward to this trip. I love to travel and I have never been to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Here I come Brandcation Blog Cabin….

TopFloor’s Louboutin Promotion & Giveaway

My oldest daughter is a huge shoe person. She LOVES shoes. I am rather boring and practical. I like to have brown shoes that go with everything and I don’t have to have white shoes for spring and summer and black for fall and winter. She, on the other hand, loves to have wedges, heels and flats galore. She gets excited about styles, colors and sparkles. I think she takes after my husband because when we first got married he had a ton of shoes! He’s not like that now but as a single guy he must have liked spending money on shoes, mostly athletic ones. Regardless of where you are at on the shoe spectrum, I am sure you can appreciate Louboutin. Even I do. They are so pretty.

NEW Ameda® Intimates Nursing Bra

I have been nursing or pregnant for the past 16 years. I have tried very few nursing wear products considering the length of time I have spent breastfeeding. The products have consisted of nursing bras, a camisole/tank top and nightie. I found most nursing tops I tried didn’t fit me right, were far to long for my short frame and left me feeling quite uncomfortable. As I have stated before, I dress for comfort. It has to feel good to make me look good.

That’s why I was excited to discover Ameda has come out with a new Intimates Apparel for Nursing Moms collection.

Intimates Nursing Camisole.
Shown below.

Intimates Nursing Bra.
Also shown below.

Ameda has created these two products for comfort and there are other interesting features to consider as well:

· Seamless cup, no underwire

· Microfiber fabric

· Fabric is tested for harmful substances according to Oeko-Tex Standard

· It’s unique side panels adapt to the ever “evolving” shape of the mother

· The easy release clasp makes breastfeeding in public a breeze

· Comes in sizes A-J cups

· Machine washable

Both retail for $39.99 and are available at AmedaOnline.com, AmedaBaby and AmedaDirect.com.

My Review

When I put on this bra, my initial response was, “Ahhhh, it’s so comfortable!” The material is soft and it washes up nicely. It comes in five different sizes. I did find that it may run a little smaller than the size chart indicates.

It is very easy to use the clasp system, but I found the fabric elastic enough that I can even move the bra to the side in order to nurse.

The fabric is very lightweight but don’t think you won’t stop sweating simply because of the type of material it’s made of because you probably will. I know I did.

I’ve been looking for a new nursing bra since my old ones are no longer made and they are becoming a little raggy looking. That’s the thing, I have probably replaced my nursing bras every 3-4 years and by the time I need new ones my old ones are extinct. It’s really a pet peeve of mine to find a product I really like only to have it off the market never to be found again when I want it again. Very sad state of affairs for this mama.

I really like the Ameda Intimates Nursing bra and am adding it to my new favorites. It gets two thumbs up for me!

Look What We Found…a Snake! – Wordless Wednesday

My husband came home from work to discover a snake (he says it’s a garden snake) on the road in front of our house. Initially we thought it was dead, but it was still alive. We think it’s injured though from a close look at certain stuff coming out of it. Our children all ran outside to see the snake and being the blogging mom that I am, I yelled, “Take the phone and get a picture! That will make a great blog post!” lol! 🙂 I’ve seen snakes before and am not overly fond of them.

Ok, be honest who’s afraid of snakes?

Hello Better Mobile Phone Service #HelloBetter

Has your mobile carrier every ticked you off? Our first cell phone was just a pay as you go. Our first mobile service provider was very dependable, service was great but they did not offer the kinds of plans we wanted so we switched. When we started with our current company it was on the recommendation of friends so you can imagine our surprise when within the first month we had trouble with my husband’s new phone. The battery had died and they could not replace it. Do you know where they sent us? Amazon. That’s right. The thing is there was no guarantee that a new battery would fix the problem, it was only what we thought might be wrong with the phone.

If I remember correctly, the customer service personnel were not clear in their instructions and it ended up taking 3x to get a phone that worked between customer service and warehouse mistakes. And of course, misunderstanding on our part. 3x shipping phones back and forth. Wouldn’t it have been easier just to have a $8 battery in stock? What bugs me about companies is when they blame you, the customer. Whatever happened to serving the customer first? Believe me I have come across more and more companies putting blame on the customer and not owning up to their own mistakes. I don’t believe consumers should just take advantage of businesses, but I still agree in “The Customer comes first,” not that they are not always right, but they should be served with respect and decency

In the case of the mobile phone, we never did complain but it has set ill with us ever since. One of those leftovers from not speaking up when we should have and it has tarnished our view of our cell phone provider. 🙁 We put up with our carrier because of perks we don’t think are available with other service providers, which is probably the main reason most people who are frustrated with their wireless provider/experience stay with them.

Survey of Wireless Customers

Survey:
• A study conducted by U.S. Cellular indicates that 43 percent of individuals are in the ‘seven year itch’ phase with their wireless provider, noting they are comfortable but suspect they are missing out on something better.

• Out of the 1,208 participants polled across four regions of the country, 56 percent of the respondents admitted to being unhappy with their carrier over the past year but only 35 percent of all respondents have ever broken up with their provider.

• In spite of this overall dissatisfaction, respondents are hesitant to call it quits. More than one-third of respondents say they stick with their current provider because they believe all carriers are the same, it is too much trouble to switch carriers, or they don’t want to sign a new contract.

Hello Better Campaign

U.S. Cellular has introduced a the Hello Better campaign and is encouraging consumers to say goodbye to mediocre cell phone service and hello to respect and a better wireless experience. They are providing:

  • the industry’s only rewards-based program
  • no contract after the first contract ends
  • free incoming calls and texts
  • free overage protection
  • and finally, free batter swap for your phone

We’ve never used U.S. Cellular before, but from the looks of things they are gearing up to try to provide a simpler, easier wireless relationship with their customers.

Visit U.S. Cellular’s Plans and Rewards Program for more information or to take full advantage of their Hello Better campaign….and please let me know what you think of their service!
