Fatal Judgement

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

Fatal Judgement is a book about a US Marshal being assigned protection duty for a federal judge. While I have had the privilege of meeting a few lawyers I have not met a judge. I tend to think that being a judge or a lawyer would be a high pressured job with the fate of many lives being in the palm of your hand to make or break someone. It would be very hard in that type of profession not to tick off someone as someone is always a loser in a court case.

In Fatal Judgement, Liz Michaels discovers that she has a unknown enemy through a tragic event which results in her needing protection from a US Marshal Jake Taylor. This discovery changes her life.

This book kept me reading its dramatized plot, however, it was fairly predictable. What I took from the book is the difference between how Liz and Jake both processed the death of their loved ones. When we lose someone we love dearly, we have a choice to go through the grieving process and move on with life accepting God’s plan or we can get angry, mostly at God and become bitter resulting in turning away from Him when we need Him the most.

Not many of us will have enemies seeking to kill us, but ALL of us will lose a loved one and experience grief. And with grief comes the choice – turn to God or turn away from Him. Liz had learned to turn to God to carry her through life’s difficulties, whereas Jake was still hanging on to his hurt and grief. I believe there’s almost always an element of anger while grieving, but the key is not to allow the grief/anger snuff out your spiritual life. Prayer, reading God’s word all go a long way in lessening the anger aspect of grief. Again, as I said before in my review of Suzanne Woods Fisher’s book The Search, it takes faith to believe that good can come from something bad. This principle may be applied to losing a loved one. We have to believe that God will work out His good through the death of a loved one, even if it was premature in our minds. The key is focusing on special memories, the good and move on by the grace of God.

Another lesson that stood out to me is to never just blindly take someone’s opinion of a person and their character; make sure you get to know the person and learn for yourself what kind of person an individual is, in and of their own right. Their are too many things to jumble a person’s perspective.

Fatal Judgment is a crime mystery book that is an enjoyable read, with some rather serious topics to convey.

The Search

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

The Search is the third in the Lancaster Country Secrets books, The Choice and The Waiting are the others in this series written by Suzanne Woods Fisher.

I have thoroughly enjoyed Suzanne’s books. As I have stated before, I am intrigued as many others are of the Amish and their lifestyle. In The Search the characters vary from predictable to very unpredictable and humorous, especially Grandma Bertha :-). Her escapades were deliberate and with a purpose, however, she dearly loved her family. And I loved the name of Bertha’s family farm – Rose Hill Farm.

Bertha “tricks” her granddaughter Betsy into visiting for the summer. But as I stated in the previous paragraph, Bertha had her reasons for the trickery. During Betsy’s visit, Bertha teaches Betsy many new things and Betsy learns to love her Grandmother. Betsy’s life is also changed because of a family secret.

This book does an exceptional job of dealing the issue of family secrets, the aftermath of them, as well as the love and forgiveness that may be found when dealing with the hurtful feelings secrets may cause. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28.

No matter how hard the “all things” are, it is always important to remember that God is over all and in all that happens to us. This is a very good reminder. I can think of many things that I wish never could have happened. It takes faith to believe that God is working things out for our greater good when circumstances seem to indicate otherwise. This is the message I took away from this book.

The Search is available now in stores everywhere and to celebrate Suzanne is hosting The Search iPad Giveaway! See details below:

Emily’s Chance – Revell Blog Tour

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

Emily’s Chance was an easy read and fairly decent story. In my opinion though, it is a typical romance novel in that boy meets girl and boy and girl get married, with a sprinkling of hope and healing in between. Pretty predicatable.

What I liked about this book was the female lead was not too big for her britches. Even though she was wealthy, she chose to live beneath her means so as not to stand out but be a so-called normal person. She had learned that certain social circles, like the one her wealthy parents frequented, were quite often more about appearances than about what mattered most in life.

I enjoyed how Emily learned that a loving family can exist after growing up in a family who did not love one another and was somewhat “disfunctional”. I loved the protrayal of good relationships with the grandparents, the community the town enjoyed and that Chance and Emily were willing to give up their dreams because of their love for one another.

I didn’t really learn any new spiritual lessons. The spiritual lessons shared with the pages of this book were reminders of what is important in life – family, good relationships, community.

A Memory Between Us – Revell Blog Tour

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

A Memory Between Us is the second book in the Wings of Glory series, which follows the three Novak brothers, B-17 bomber pilots with the US Eighth Air Force stationed in England during World War II.

As with the first book in the Wings of Glory series, Sarah Sundin, does a wonderful job of intertwining a love story with the historical job of B-17 pilots during the second World War. Only this time she tells the story of a war nurse as well.

Ruth Doherty is a female character with whom many women might just relate to more than they’d care to admit. Ever swear off men at some point in your life? Whether silently or outwardly? Yeah, me too, back in my college days. Well, Ruth is a woman that had plenty of reason to do so and had to learn to trust again.

Like any relationship, trust only comes when a person feels safe and loved for who they are. Ruth had to first deal with her past before she could open up and fully trust again.

I love Ruth for her desire to support her siblings and for her bravery, but I think she hid behind her responsibility.

Jack was the male lead in this book and he was gentleman, but somehow let his pride trip him up. Our pride is an ugly thing especially when it leads us to think we are better than others. In Jack’s case, his pride got in the way of his work and relationships.

You will laugh and cry in this historical romance as it reveals a journey of two people as they allow God to change their old ways to make room for the blossoming new ones.

Making Waves – Revell Blog Tour

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

Making Waves

When spunky Marguerite Westing discovers that her family will summer at Lake Manawa in 1895, she couldn’t be more thrilled. It is the perfect way to escape her agonizingly boring suitor, Roger Gordon. It’s also where she stumbles upon two new loves: sailing, and sailing instructor Trip Andrews.

But this summer of fun turns to turmoil as her father’s secret threatens to ruin the family forever. Will free-spirited Marguerite marry Roger to save her father’s name and fortune? Or will she follow her heart–even if it means abandoning the family she loves?

Making Waves

Our Review

Making Waves is a book about family relationships – the joys and challenges. I enjoyed reading of Marguerite’s struggles with certain individuals in her life. Her father’s secret grieved me, but I admired Marguerite’s loyalty to her family and her desire to help.

Marguerite is probably like many of us who have been afraid to confront someone, especially a someone with a stronger personality, with our real thoughts and feelings about a very serious and important subject. In order for a relationship to flourish the people involved have to be upfront and honest, not in a hurtful way, even though the truth sometimes does hurt.

Marguerite is a character who also teaches the reader the consequences of lying. Lying, like many other sins, damages relationships. Better to be honest and establish trustworthiness than risk never being trusted again.

I think most people could relate to something in Marguerite and learn from her character’s mistakes. I could relate more to Trip Andrews and his struggle to trust than I could to Marguerite. I found this book entertaining and wondered from one page to the next what Marguerite would do next.

Making Waves may be purchased through Revell or major book retailers for $14.99.

Choosing to SEE – Revell Blog Tour

I received the following book in exchange for writing a review. While I consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, my review is my honest opinion and thoughts of the book.

Choosing to SEE bookcover-page

When I read the pitch for the Choosing to SEE (by Mary Beth Chapman with Ellen Vaughn) blog tour from Revell, I knew that I really wanted to read Mary Beth Chapman’s book. Having lost babies in utero, my dad and grandmother I understood the grief process and even though it has been a few years for some of my losses, I still grieve for them. I also knew that Mary Beth understood grief in a big way since she and her family lost their youngest daughter, Maria, in 2008 and I am always on the look out for books on grief written by credible Christian sources.

Choosing to SEE is Mary Beth’s life story. Her journey with God. I found Mary Beth as real as she could get. I laughed with her and cried with her as she shared her story. I empathized with her as she struggled to grasp where God is when things fall apart.

I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the wife and family of Christian artist/song writer/musician, Steven Curtis Chapman, whom I have listened to since the late 1980s. I found their story encouraging and inspiring.

Choosing to SEE isn’t a book on grieving, that’s just one of my reasons for desiring to read it. Choosing to SEE is for anyone, as I am sure Mary Beth’s story will touch the hearts of all who read her story.

I love the quote Mary Beth has on her website:

Love of God is pure when joy and suffering inspire an equal degree of gratitude.

Review: The Seeker – A Revell Book Tour

I received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While I consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, my review is my honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

The Seeker

The Seeker by Ann Gabhart is a story of a jilted young woman who joins a Shaker community to escape her own struggles while the country is on the brink of Civil War. The story is set during the 1860s, the main character Charlotte Vance is a pampered Southern woman with a mind of her own. Thinking she knows what she wants, her fiance throws her for a loop when he joins the Shakers, which is a religious group that does not allow marriage. This leaves Charlotte spinning for her barrings. Then her father brings home a new wife, surprising and hurting Charlotte even more.

Circumstances leave Charlotte little choice as her household is in a turmoil of changes and the civil war about to begin, to do some quick thinking to get her life back to the order she desires so badly. Little does she realize how her decisions will ultimately change the course of her life.

I learned a lot about the Shakers reading this novel. They had some interesting beliefs, but they definitely loved one another and were a community that helped not only their own but others that were a part of the greater community in which they lived.

There were some surprising events in the book, but it was a heart warming story with heart wrenching details of a country ravaged by the war during the 1860’s. Included was an unexpected love story between a young woman, her Savior and a man she never expected to be reunited with.

As controversial as slavery was and is, I always love the stories that portray a love and devotion between the owners and their slaves, even those who have been freed. I like to think of it as a picture of God’s love for us when we are entrenched in our mire of sin. He’s forgiven us so much and continues to do so over and over again.

Book Review of Courting Morrow Little – A Revell Blog Tour

I received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While I consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, my review is my honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

Courting Morrow Little

Courting Morrow Little was an intriguing novel based in the frontier time. I really liked the story line, as tragic as that time period was with the unrest between the Native American Indians and the settlers. The main character, Morrow Little, was no stranger to tragedy either.

The story touched on many issues prevalent in that time period. However, the issue that stood out to me most was Morrow’s struggle to deal with the past and move on from her own personal tragedy to embrace her future.

I really enjoyed Morrow’s love story and how the author intertwined it with her personal conflict. It was interesting how Morrow learned who her real friends were, but yet it corresponded with how we all realize at some point or another who our true friends are and who are not. Life lessons often come with some hurtful knocks along the way. True friends need to be treasured because they are hard to come by and need to be nurtured to some degree to keep the bonds close. Other friendships will come and go.

This was another riveting story that I stayed up late to read.
