Bilingual Education Starting Young

For the past four years the economy has been struggling, the unemployment rate has been on a steady increase, and families all over the U.S. are feeling it in some respect. It seems that even though the economy has finally started to improve there is no guarantee for the future. Having an education may be the only way to stay ahead in this cut-throat society.

What the Future Holds for Language

The existence of a diverse, global society seems to be a trend that is going to stick, this is especially prevalent in the U.S. The U.S. has been known as the land of immigration for a large portion of its history, and while the “melting pot” has been an interesting theory, it has not happened in practice. On the contrary, most major U.S. population centers have become more of an ethnic and linguistic checkerboard; Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese and Chinese speakers represent some of the fastest-growing segments of the immigrant U.S. population.

Being Prepared

Wisdom, traditionally, has been to start teaching a second language in middle school, or even high school. However, numerous studies clearly demonstrate that the optimal period in a child’s life for multilingual education is during the preschool years – at exactly the same time they are learning their first language. Yes, it is possible to learn a second and third language later in life, but it is more difficult, because that neurological “window of opportunity” – when the brain is most malleable – has passed.

Dr. Fred Genessee, Professor of Psychology at McGill University in Montreal believes it’s as easy for young children to learn two or three languages as it is for them to learn one. He’s not alone; educators throughout the world (in countries that often have two or even three official languages) have understood this for decades.

The way a child learns a second language is by actually speaking it in a total immersion environment. You may recall an episode of the animated series The Simpsons in which young Bart gets trapped on a farm in France – and by the end of the episode, finds he’s actually speaking the language. While this was a fictional scenario, the phenomenon is real; anyone who has taken young children abroad to stay with relatives in a foreign country for any length of time has observed this happening.

Enrollment in a preschool program that offers immersion in other languages is the best way to get your child started. This investment will make him/her much more competitive in the job market later on.

The Search

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

The Search is the third in the Lancaster Country Secrets books, The Choice and The Waiting are the others in this series written by Suzanne Woods Fisher.

I have thoroughly enjoyed Suzanne’s books. As I have stated before, I am intrigued as many others are of the Amish and their lifestyle. In The Search the characters vary from predictable to very unpredictable and humorous, especially Grandma Bertha :-). Her escapades were deliberate and with a purpose, however, she dearly loved her family. And I loved the name of Bertha’s family farm – Rose Hill Farm.

Bertha “tricks” her granddaughter Betsy into visiting for the summer. But as I stated in the previous paragraph, Bertha had her reasons for the trickery. During Betsy’s visit, Bertha teaches Betsy many new things and Betsy learns to love her Grandmother. Betsy’s life is also changed because of a family secret.

This book does an exceptional job of dealing the issue of family secrets, the aftermath of them, as well as the love and forgiveness that may be found when dealing with the hurtful feelings secrets may cause. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28.

No matter how hard the “all things” are, it is always important to remember that God is over all and in all that happens to us. This is a very good reminder. I can think of many things that I wish never could have happened. It takes faith to believe that God is working things out for our greater good when circumstances seem to indicate otherwise. This is the message I took away from this book.

The Search is available now in stores everywhere and to celebrate Suzanne is hosting The Search iPad Giveaway! See details below:

Tell the EPA to Ban Bee-Killing Pesticides!

You can tell by the topics I am covering this week that I am in farm mode 🙂 but these issues are very important to our family and ideally, they should be to everyone who eats. Bees are another important creature to the basic survival of our food system and pesticides are destroying them. The video below is of a beekeeper:

Get involved!

Easy Ways to Make Your Home More Eco-Friendly

Easy Ways to Make Your Home More Eco-Friendly

We all want to do our part to protect the environment and preserve what God has given us, but without a large hole in our pocket book. It may seem difficult, if not impossible with the high cost of eco-friendly products these days. But doing your part doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. Baby steps in the right direction make a big difference, you just have to know which ones to take.

Use less water.

Saving water is all about small steps, here are a few that will help save big.

– Shut off the water while you brush your teeth
– Take showers that are a minute or two shorter
– Only flush the toilet when you need to
– Only run full loads of laundry and dishes
– Buy from sustainable producers. These are farmers, ranchers, and other producers that use techniques that pollute less and use less water. You can do some research online or ask at your local organic market to find these products.

Use less energy.

If you don’t have the money to buy a hybrid car or convert your house to solar power, you can make a big difference with small changes like these:

– Buy energy efficient appliances. They may be more expensive, but in the long run make up for the increased cost in lower energy bills.
– Unplug chargers when you’re not using them. Cell phone and other chargers use up powers even if there’s nothing attached to them.
– Put devices with remotes, like T.V.s, VCRs, and stereos, on a power strip and turn it off when you’re not using them. These devices use a lot of power to run the remote receiver even when the device is off.
– Walk or ride your bike for short trips.
– Buy local products. It takes energy to transport food and other products across the country. Buying local not only supports your local economy, it helps them use less energy. Support small, local farms!

When it comes to saving energy and water, it’s a great idea to get the kids involved. You can even make it a game. Have them track how much water and electricity everyone is using. You can compete to see who uses the least water. You can often count on your kids to help keep you on track when given the task.

Reuse.

Most of us know the three R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle, but when we work on conserving, we often leave reuse out of the picture. While you can often find tips on how to reuse common products from other people, what you need most is creativity. With a little thought there are many items around your home that can be reused – toilet paper holders can be used to sow seeds for the vegetable patch. And old yogurt containers can be cut into strip to make plant labels. Old food jars can be refilled with homemade foods or can make great impromptu vases.

Use environmentally friendly products. When you go to the grocery store, you probably see more and more “natural” or “eco friendly” products every time. There are generally two big problems with these products: 1. Just because they’re more natural than regular products, doesn’t mean they’re entirely natural. 2, They’re often expensive.

If you want inexpensive, natural, safe products, why not just make them yourself? Vinegar is a great way to clean and disinfect glass and other surfaces. Need to remove stubborn stains? Just add some baking soda to your vinegar cleaner. Some quick searching online will lead you to hundreds of other natural safe home-made cleaning products.

We all knowing that going green means better for the environment, but it’s also better for you. Conserving resources also helps save you money, which is something most of us are happy to accomplish for our families.

Food, Inc.

Yes, we are on a food kick. We have seen both of these documentaries that we have posted about this week, but we wanted to revisit them because their message is so very important to the future of our food system here in the USA. I am also hoping to attend a Local Food Round-Table Discussion tonight and wanted to refresh my memory as to the issues of concern. Not that I plan on saying too much. I am more of a silent observer, but if I have to I will be better prepared to voice my opinion if need be.

Food, Inc. has the same basic message as The Future of Food, but presents it in a different way with different people (Michael Pollen, Joel Salatin, a Christian farmer from Virginia, Stoneyfield Yogurt and more). It also deals more with ecoli outbreaks, saving seeds, feed lots and poultry, as well as the farmers and meat packers who work in those industries.

Here’s to the health of not only our families but the health of the whole nation!

Let me know how these documentary movies have affected the way you think.

Auntie Anne’s At Home Baking Kit

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product. Editor’s Note: I also believe we won this product because we posted about an author’s giveaway… maybe…I also think I am loosing brain cells without my daughter’s help lately since we have been down to one computer!

You have heard of Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, right? Most of you probably know they taste yummy, so you don’t need our review to tell you that fact. However, you may never have tried their At Home Baking Kit. We were not disappointed, it makes exceptional tasting pretzels as well. We forgot to take pictures of our baking experience. It’s pretty hard to remember to take pictures of a food review product when you have ten hungry people waiting to be fed. So forgive us for this oversight! What you would have witnessed is us mixing a very easy pretzel baking mix and then leaving it to rise too long. It did not affect their taste just their look. They were rather thin, not plump and puffy like they should have been.

We would need two pretzel mixes to sufficiently feed our family a decent snack, as we served this box as a side with a meal.

What else can we say? They were very good.
