Monday Motivation

Ok, how did you all do in the blog hop last week? I did terrible. I have to start a new routine for this and stick with it before I start gardening.

Speaking of gardening, I attended the MOSES conference over the weekend and shared a ride with a fellow classmate of our Stateline Farm Beginnings course with whom I am going to be working with this upcoming growing season. It was great to get to know her (Mrs. A.) better. During our CSA (Consumer Supported Agriculture) course this past winter, which Mrs. A. was also a fellow classmate, we talked and came to an agreement to work together this year so that I (my family too) could gain more production/growing/market experience. This transpired due to my husband and I not getting our business plan in on time (remember all those weeks of me saying I was working on it? well I didn’t get it done :-() and the CSA planning course left me feeling like we were not quite ready to offer our own CSA this year.

Anyhoo…this week I thought I would start the week with a thankful list because I came home from the MOSES conference rather thankful after we slid off the road due to it being a sheet of ice and having a relaxing time with our two older girls and baby. Then today I was discontent over a clogged toilet and messes. Soo I am thankful for…

1. For the Kind people who stopped on Saturday night to push us out of the ditch when we were stuck.
2. Indoor plumbing (even when it malfunctions ;-o ).
3. A roof over our heads.
4. Our health.
5. The Lord Jesus Christ who is ever patient and sticks with me even when I don’t stick with Him.

What are you thankful for this week?

Monday Motivation:

~ To get ahead in blog posts.
~ To visit the blogs of our readers/commenters.
~ To do something fun with the children.
~ To try and get up earlier in preparation for spring – it’s so hard though!
~ To go to bed at the same time for at least three nights this week. (HA!)

How about you what are your motivators?

The Stupid Gene

Ok, I just want to clarify that this post is not bashing the male gender. As a matter of fact this blog title comes from my husband because he is the one who came up with it. So as I am sitting here holding go-go boy (our six month old), who just wants to chomp on anything, but mostly our fingers, unmentionable parts (of me!) and my laptop because his teeth are coming in. Then my two, almost three year old, is tormenting his sister by kicking her in the behind, pulling off the swim cap she is wearing (to keep her bangs, that we are trying to grow out, out of her eyes) and all I can think of is The Stupid Gene. I get after my two year old and he gets mad at me because I am getting after him?! Say what? All I can think of is The Stupid Gene.

The Stupid Gene is something my husband says boys have. He admits he has it too, but it is especially in little boys. They just do the most ridiculous things. Things that I should be able to laugh about most times, but more often than not their antics drive me to distraction. If you ask them why they have done something they can never answer. So when we find food spatters on the ceiling, or dirt piles beneath our hutch, they never fess up to it. But let me share a little secret, before we had boys there was nothing on our ceilings and there was definitely nothing beneath our furniture or hutches. Mostly because our girls were not like that, plus back then I was doing most of the cleaning. Now that there are ten of us, the work gets spread around a little more each year. However, it’s very hard to teach our boys how to do their chores (sweeping the dining room, putting dishes away, cleaning their room and more recently my husband is teaching our nine year old to do the boys laundry, so they are responsible for having clean clothes and not blame anyone else if they don’t because they were putting ALL their clothes in the dirty laundry pile. Yes, clean and dirty clothes end up in the dirty pile because they are still learning to put their clean clothes away too.)

Oh and my daughter just came in crying because one of my older boys was swinging a stick and bonked her on the side of the head. Ouch! Again The Stupid Gene reigns, he’s been told not to swing sticks, arrows or anything else for that matter around other people. Why don’t they remember?

Oh and my two year old likes to do somersaults on our bed over and over again regardless of where he lands. On me, on the baby, on the floor…actually he hasn’t hit the floor due to somersaults…yet. That really isn’t The Stupid Gene though, it is just waaaay too much energy bursting out in an odd way. I have another boy who jumps up and down. Yep, without watching so if we are all sprawled on our bed watching a movie, he jumps on us too. Our oldest boy does not really seem to struggle with an excessive amount of energy. He is just a big tease. Wonder what go-go boy will do, he’s already moving. He even squirms while he nurses…I hurt thinking about being treated like a rubber band….ouchie-pachowchie.

We may be in trouble. Help save us from The Stupid Gene!

Unfortunately my husband was not available to provide further inspiration or consultation during the writing or editing of this post. However, I may be appealing to him for ideas so that I can feature a regular Stupid Gene post.

Monday Motivation – It’s Winter in Chicago!

You know that old saying on Ground Hog Day about “in like a lion, out like lamb” or something to that affect, well, that’s how I felt last week with the start of December. We have had such a beautiful fall here, then bam! winter smacks us in the face with cold, wind and even snow. I have my favorite winter time activities and as I was saying to some of our children, if I could enjoy them winter wouldn’t be so long and unenjoyable (for the most part and is that even a word?) to be. But I am usually pregnant, recovering from a miscarriage, have an infant…that I really haven’t enjoyed winter like I use to do.

This is one of the first Decembers in the past six years I have started without much of a rain cloud over my head. November 30th marked the sixth anniversary of our losing our son Matthew 18 weeks into my pregnancy. It was a shock to go into my appointment expecting to hear a little heart beat only to discover none. Then going through the ordeal of an ultrasound confirming it, the inside of my head screaming “why?!” and then the trip home to share the news with my husband and five young children who were anticipating a new baby. And finally even harder still was the decisions to be made, the very negative experience we had to go through when we opted to get Matthew taken care of as soon as possible so I could heal and get back to taking care of our other children and the grief that was yet to come. Nope, not easy at all. I didn’t know what grief meant until I lost a child that far into a pregnancy. For me grief took on a whole new form and it took me a long time to process it. To this day I avoid looking at the pictures we were given of Matthew because of the sadness it brings to me. They are tucked away in a special box that has been packed away because I cannot go through the emotion of reliving my experience when the children have asked to see the pictures. Pretty sad, eh? And what a way to start off the week! I am serious, reflective and even sad, but this is the first year that I can actually get through writing about Matthew without crying. Now that is
progress.

Writing about Matthew kept coming to my mind throughout the past week and since I really haven’t made this blog a personal, personal blog due to, again, a past experience, I thought maybe sharing this would show all of you another side of me. It isn’t easy to open up to people I don’t know. I use to be an open book and able to hide behind my keyboard. However, age has made me slow to take the chances I once did when I was naive and younger. Printed words are too easily misconstrued, just are a person’s actions, motivations and verbal words.

On a more positive note….

Following up on last week’s Monday Motivation:

~ The ongoing cleaning and purging is…well…ongoing. We were able to get our tree up and decorated much to the pleasure and enjoyment of the children.

~ No business plan finished. 🙁 We ended up getting sick with colds, so Sunday and Monday, even Tuesday was sluggish, so I was unable to get at it with the rest of life going on.

~ We did get to the Thrift Store after we got our tree on Saturday (that was a great outing!) and found some needed items. But due to being sick we have not got to the YMCA.

~ We have played Christmas music a number of days, but not every day. And we still need to watch a classic Christmas movie.

~ Still no laptop. It’s been a war over our pc for me to get my work done and the children to get their school done, but we are managing somehow. The computer guy has been great, but he’s trying to solve a puzzle he’s never had to solve and each time we talk I end up giving him a missing piece of information. So he’s hopeful and I will remain so as well for now.

This week’s Motivation:Do I have anything new? Just a couple. I’ll be going to my CSA course, worked on my homework this past weekend so I could hand it in. I need to research antifungal diets and figure out how I am going to manage to survive on one, as I need to help get rid of baby’s thrush and the cause of it. First baby to have thrush, unbelievable.

Thrifty Thursday- Free Days At The Museum Of Science and Industry (a day late)

A couple of weeks ago we where able to enjoy a fun trip to TMOSAI in Chicago. Aside from paying for parking we got in free since TMOSAI offers free days for homeschoolers, just as they do for public schools!

We had a enjoyable time seeing all the fun activities at the museum. Unfortunately we were only able to visit the 1st floor of TMOSAI so we hope to go back on another free day and see the other two floors. However, our children loved exploring the U5O5 exibit as well as the Farm Exhibit, Science Exhibits, and so many other featured exhibits.

Here are some pictures from our fun day-

Happy Thrifty Thursday!

Our Review

In some ways I feel sad about all the gender neutral products that are coming out. I miss seeing the frilly girly products and the products that scream “For Boys!” On the other hand, a product like Baby GoGo seems like the perfect gift for boys and girls since both need to be taught to be nurturing and loving to their siblings and other little friends.

We were sent the Baby GoGo and the Baby GoGo Diaper Bag Set to review. My younger daughter adores this doll! Sometimes I think she likes it better than her Madeline doll but I guess it depends upon the day. Now that our 2-year-old son has a little brother he can be seen mimicking the happenings of our household in his play with Baby Go Go and his sister’s Madeline doll. But I have to admit that my daughter has claimed Baby GoGo for her own, but can be persuaded to let her little brother play with it too. I think that both of them enjoy holding the real deal though. Baby GoGo is much lighter than our infant son so it doesn’t scare the rest of the family if little hands shift quickly while holding Baby GoGo!

Baby GoGo is well made and has already held up through at least one trip through the laundry cycle due to an accident. Baby GoGo’s clothing is easy for preschoolers to put on, although the hat did give our daughter a little trouble since it seems to pop off. Baby GoGo’s blanket is very much like our infant son’s new baby blanket making it even more authentic for our younger children.

The diaper bag is also well made. While the diaper bag and accessories are great and are similar to mom’s and dad’s, they tend to get misplaced or lost easily. Ever notice that some children would rather just undress the dolls and leave the clothes lying around the house? My little ones are still learning how to pick up and put things away in their proper place, so it’s mom (me!) that needs to be patient in the process!

Baby GoGo products are cute, affordable (for a quality made itemsl) and appealing to both boys and girls.

Available from local toy specialty stores and online at www.babygogodoll.com.

Introducing Our New Baby – Sir Eats Alot

I know, I know, some of you are probably saying “Finally!” but here is our new baby….Sir Eats Alot 😀 We think he is a precious addition to our family. His soft, silky, thick hair is amazing! He has the most hair of all our babies. My husband thinks it is growing thicker with each passing day, but I don’t think it really is. I just love the smell of a new baby! We are very thankful to the Lord for our son’s safe arrival.

100_5817

Sir Eats Alot seems to be adjusting to life in the big bad world. I think he went through a growth spurt as soon as my milk came in because as his nickname says, he eats a lot. It has just been the last couple of days where it hasn’t been a nursing marathon of every hour or two 24/7. He has been having longer stretches of sleep and is more contented after eating. I am really hoping that he’s back up to his birth weight or beyond. I will find out tomorrow at our two week appointment.

Sir Eats Alot’s Birth

Sir Eats Alot’s birth wasn’t quite like my other home births. My water broke a few hours after the girls and I returned from mini golfing in the wee hours of August 18th. Contractions started soon after, but I waited a couple of hours before I called my midwife. We decided she should come because with my other two home births the babies came within an hour or two and she missed my last son’s birth by about five minutes!

Contractions continued to come, but did not get any stronger and as daylight broke through the sky, I knew I wouldn’t have the baby before all the children woke up. It was very challenging for me to labor with a house full of noise and people and I think it slowed my labor. I am a very private person and I would have preferred to labor quietly alone during the middle of the night. But, alas, that wasn’t to be this time.

So my labor slowed and wasn’t going anywhere so my husband took the children to the park, I tried to rest and then my midwife suggested taking some homeopathy remedies – two of them which are like black/blue cohosh – which can sometimes speed up a putsy labor. I had nothing to lose by trying. So I took that about 12 hours after my water broke, an hour or so later the contractions were getting stronger and by 3:00pm I was starting to feel pushy. 40 minutes later Sir Eats Alot was born into his Daddy’s hands. I haven’t pushed that long since my first child! I have pushed out a 9 pound 8 ounce baby in 1-2 pushes, so this was hard and tiring. All I wanted to do was lay down and rest with my new baby, which is exactly what I did!

Life with Our New Baby

It’s been two and a half years since we had a newborn in the house and oh! how soon we forget the demanding newborn days! So bear with me as I adjust my days, my work schedule, our homeschool schedule and life in general to accommodate this new baby of ours. Right now I am going on very little sleep and hoping life settles into a new normal (whatever that may be) very soon.

As you may have noticed, we abandoned our normal posting schedule this week, I forgot to post last week’s giveaway and we are still catching up on reviews from our Back to School Product Guide. It may take us another week or so to get back on track as we get all the reviews posted.

Until next time….
