About the Book:

A bizarre hit-and-run brings Branigan Powers back to the crime-solving beat

A fatal crash involving two college students heading home for the holidays seems like an unfortunate accident. But when the surviving girl wakens, she tells a curious story of the vehicle that forced them off the road–an old-fashioned, 1950s-style hearse.

Reporter Branigan Powers delves into the mystery that takes her to the college campus and leads her into dangerous fraternity and sorority pledge parties.

Reunited with the homeless Malachi Martin, who is so adept at seeing what isn’t there rather than what is, Branigan must uncover what is really going on at the college before other students are put in danger.

This second installment in the author’s cozy mystery series delves into the world of newspapers and life on the streets–both of which the author knows well.

Book Review: Coffee, the World, and Jesus, but Not Necessarily in That Order

ffr-image-for-posts-300x909780825444654

About the book:

When many Christians take a long, hard look at the lives of the spiritual elite in America, they want to shout, “I don’t want to be like that!” Ron DeMiglio knows how they feel and he’s not afraid to do the shouting–even when those shouts are sometimes directed at himself.

Coffee, the World, and Jesus is a collection of mildly contrarian musings from this international coffee businessman who happens to love Jesus. In these humorous vignettes about the relational, flawed, unwavering faith Ron clings to, readers will find glimmers of their own daily struggles to reflect Christ in a fallen world. For the religiously cautious, the disillusioned, and jaded followers of Christianity, this is a refreshing look at how God reveals Himself to be so much bigger than politics, dogmas, or western influences.

Ron’s sidesplitting series of stories about how he found his spiritual groove smack-dab in the middle of his God-breathed, coffee-scented uniqueness will appeal to readers looking for a quick bite of spiritual growth with their next latte.

Book Review ~ Season of Heartbreak

ffr-image-for-posts-300x90

9780825444715

About the book:

After a devastating breakup, many people–Christians included–are left heartbroken, lonely, confused, even devoid of hope. The grief of losing a romantic partner is often similar to that experienced after the death of a loved one. Yet, too often, friends, family, and the church see these breakups as trivial events.

As a therapist, Mark Karris sees the devastation in the wake of this loss every day. He knows that the pain isn’t inconsequential. He also knows that insights and principles are not enough to help heal the shattered hearts of those who are grieving. Moving past platitudes and into action, Season of Heartbreak pulls from a variety of spiritual practices:

  • Contemplative prayer
  • Journaling
  • Weeping
  • Self-compassion
  • Being loved by others
  • Forgiveness
  • An original four-step transformational practice

Readers can learn to progress gracefully through the journey of heartbreak, and will pick up the emotional equipment to confront and move through loss in other areas of their life to come.

Book Review ~ The Runaway

ffr-image-for-posts-300x90

9781782642428

About the book:

Shortly before her eighteenth birthday, Rhiannon Morgan runs away from the remote Welsh village of Llandymna. Camping out in Dyrys Woods, she starts to make a new life for herself. In the woods she finds space for her active imagination–weaving together the stories she loves and memories of her past, including the mother she lost thirteen years ago.

Back in the village, Rhiannon’s disappearance triggers a series of events that uncover the cracks in Llandymna’s quiet surface. Relationships become frayed as a young police officer is forced to investigate his neighbors, and the village’s elderly storyteller hints at a secret that the older generation has kept for decades. But as painful as the village’s past may be, it may hold the key for hope in the present…

Claire Wong’s strong debut explores how human relationships develop, how we change as we interact with one another, and the role of folktales and mythology in small communities.

Transformed: Challenging Myths About the Power-Filled Life

ffr-image-for-posts-300x90

9780857218124

About the book:

How do we address, deal with, and encounter hardship? How do we embrace the kingdom message involving redemption and restoration, but also help people feel safe to be honest? How do we remove the stigma surrounding broken areas–areas where people aren’t healed–and address suffering?

Transformed takes Romans 12:1-8 as its central text and each chapter begins with a verse. The theme of the book is change. True change doesn’t come about from a quick fix, which in charismatic circles is generally through the laying on of hands; it takes sacrifice, sweat, and suffering. This is the key to morality, integrity, and longevity in the Christian faith.

Too Deep For Words: A Civil War Novel

ffr-image-for-posts-300x90

9780825444197

About the book:

Carrie Ann Collier has been a newlywed for nineteen blissful days–as blissful as life can be in the midst of war, that is. Soon that war will take a toll she never expected. When her new husband, Peyton, goes missing during battle, she refuses to believe he is dead and must find a way to move forward with everyday life in the face of fear.

As Carrie struggles with how to welcome her estranged sister, Margaret, back into her life, another new arrival appears on her doorstep–her husband’s best friend, and rebel officer, Eli. Wounded and bitter, Eli is nonetheless committed to keeping his promise to Peyton: take care of the Collier women, no matter what. But to Carrie, he’s a painful reminder of her lost love.

Then unexpected news makes Carrie wonder if miracles do happen. If Carrie infiltrates the enemy once again, she might find out what really happened to the love of her life. Will Eli be able to keep his promise to keep her safe? Can they forgive each other if promises are broken?

As fans of Boeshaar’s books have come to expect, Too Deep for Words is a meticulously researched novel. Readers are taken directly into the heart of the realities of the Civil War and reminded how, even in the darkest circumstances, faith in Christ offers hope.

Our Review:

As a fan of historical fiction, this book aims to please! I LOVE historical fiction and Civil War based novels. This story is well written and researched. I loved the characters and plot line! This is one not to miss!
