Food Show Lady

Guest post written by Kevin Beach

I love all the food shows on TV and I’m so glad there are so many now! I consider myself a bit of a baker so I especially like all the cake shows and stuff that’s on. Cake Boss is my favorite because I also live in New Jersey and Buddy just has a really good vibe about him. I also really like all the Food Network Challenges because it’s really inspiring to me to see what other bakers can do in a short time with nothing but edible ingredients! There’s a relatively new one called Cupcake Wars that I absolutely adore even though I feel like the cupcake craze is really ending a slow death. I like seeing what they do with all the different ingredients and flavors and I also like the element of competition that’s always out and about. I got satellite from a satellite TV company because they had all the obscure food channels I wanted and I couldn’t be happier with the selection. They’re really helping me fine tune my hobby!

Patio Furniture

I know summer is ending, but with our move it makes me covet new patio furniture. We have yet to move our old, worn, heavy picnic table over from our old house. I think part of my husband is loathe to move the heavy thing, yet another part of him doesn’t want to see the hideous thing again, even though it has served us well over the years. There just comes a time when change is a good thing. The problem is we’d have to buy TWO new patio sets to fit our family of ten as I don’t think they make sets bigger than 6-8.

I really like the glass topped ones, but it seems like everyone has those. I’d like something nice, functional and that will last a while.

This one is very nice, but not very practical for us, maybe if it was just my husband and I, and we entertained a lot.

If it wasn’t dark outside I’d go take a picture of our patio and see if you all had some decorating ideas for me! But it’s too dark to take a picture right now and I will probably forget to do a follow up of this post.

So for now I dream of creating an oasis on my sunny patio…

Colortime Crafts & Markers Review

Colortime Crafts and Markers sell, shirts, pillowcases, tote bags, backpacks, bandanas, bibs, headwraps, & of course fabric markers.

Since 1990 over 2 million children and adults throughout the country have enjoyed Colortime Crafts And Markers and proudly display their keepsakes. So make your next event one that will be seen and talked about for a long time. Explore our website or give us a call to find out more about our programs.”

You can find all of these on their website at www.colortime.com

My Review:

I received a tote bag, with 3 markers (blue, yellow, & pink).

Here’s the before picture.

And here’s the after.

This is a great rainy or snow day project.  Even terrific for birthday parties.

They tell you in the instruction how to prep & care for your project.  The markers are non toxic and permanent.  BUT,  will wash off your hand (I tried and it worked). I’d make sure you are in a well ventilated room, as the markers give off a smell.  If you have smaller kids, I’d recommend a smock or old play shirt.  As the markers are permanent on fabric.  All in all, love it!

Check out their website at colortime.com and they are also on Facebook.

The Number Train Giant Floor Puzzle / Twin Sisters Review

About Twin Sisters:

“Fraternal Twins Kim Thompson and Karen Hilderbrand have always been close, and have always worked well together. This company was born out of a love for children and seeing the wonderful look of pride on their faces when they have mastered a concept, and have had fun doing it!

Kim started her career as a classroom teacher. She loved teaching first grade and would incorporate music on a daily basis. My class would sing our spelling words, clap out rhythms, march around the room – all while learning. Many phonemic awareness activities involve music, and I found this to be a really fun and effective way to teach. When I earned my masters degree in “Integrating the Arts into the Elementary School Curriculum,”
I was convinced that music was a powerful teaching tool. I began teaching third grade and while becoming familiar with my new math curriculum, discovered that I would be teaching the multiplication facts. What a challenge! I knew that using music and rhythm would make it fun and easy – so that’s what I did. Karen and I worked together and wrote “Rap With The Facts.” We recorded our first album with the help of Hal Wright, and that’s how it all began!”

Since the beginning, we have been blessed with continual growth. Our MISSION is to be The Leader in Children’s Educational Music. We have worked very hard to create excellent products that children will enjoy, and to make learning effective and fun for the lives that we touch through our music.  To get a glimpse of how hard we have been working to be the leader in children’s educational music, visit our awards section. www.twinsisters.com/awards

Twin Sisters Productions offers many children’s learning activities.  The kids don’t even realize they are learning because they are having fun!

I received “The Number Train Giant Floor Puzzle”

“Young learners will quickly begin to recognize numerals, number words, and number order 1 to 20 with this all-new giant Number Train Floor Puzzle! The 6-foot x 7-inch puzzle features 27 large, sturdy laminated pieces. The Music CD includes 12 songs that teach numbers and counting. Bonus! Print the 48-page Numbers & Counting Activity Book PDF from your own computer! Practice tracing and writing numbers, counting sets, and more!”

Even though my daughter is still a little young for this product (recommended ages are 4 to 10).  She really enjoys the puzzle and songs.  Each puzzle piece has a number of animals relating to the current number they are on.  Granted she doesn’t know her numbers in order yet, she does understand matching and is also learning about animals.  I printed the activity book and that is a bit advanced for her at this time, but it teaches them number counting and writing.  The music is great!  I love the fact the puzzle comes with a CD, to print the activity book at any time!  Most products you use the activity book once and you need to dispose of it.  Great product for upcoming birthday parties, holidays, or rainy or snowy day activities.

For this product and many others, visit the Twin Sisters website at http://www.twinsisters.com/

Twin Sisters can also be found on Facebook &

Twitter!

The tabs’ unique design keeps inserts from falling out, so your dividers stay securely labeled. Constructed with durable plastic, these dividers offer lasting organization in a big way.”
Product #3
“Avery® Desk Style HI-LITER® , Yellow, Pack of 2
Call out bright ideas with appropriately bright color. With this HI-LITER® set, you can mark key words and phrases with brilliant fluorescent yellow that is nontoxic. The molded chisel tip lets you highlight or underline, and the durable plastic tip won’t fray or mush. A faceted barrel provides a comfortable grip, so you can wield the highlighter with ease as you mark documents, notes, books and more. And, the improved formula means you can leave the cap off for up to a week and still highlight with ease. Trust the original highlighter.
My Review:
I always cringe with I snap the rings on a binder back together.  If you’ve ever gotten your fingers in the way, you know what I mean.  With this Avery binder, no cringing needed!  The binder closes very smooth and opens easily.  Paper fit nicely even with the binder tabs.  Moving on to the Binder Tabs the bigger tabs to write or type on are great!  I would always run out of room or have to squish a word.  Not anymore.  And who doesn’t love Hi-Liters!  I’m always using them for one purpose or another.  I definitely recommend Avery products!  Please visit their website at avery.com

Separation Anxiety And a Move!

We all know what separation anxiety is, it’s when a small child is fearful and full of anxiety when separated from his/her mother, right? Or is that all it is? What about moms, can we have separation anxiety? I believe we can and to be honest, I am suffering from it this week. Actually it just sort of happened overnight as our house takes on that hollow sound…..hollow sound, you ask…..

We are moving! This is a huge move for us, in more ways than one.

We have lived where we are for the past 16 years. Our current home has served us well, but we have really outgrown it. I think we have been at that point since child number six. We love our current town. It is a great little town. We love our neighborhood. It’s quiet. We have had the same neighbors around us for all of that time or over half of that time. We’ve had the same phone number…and all of that is about to change.

It is a mixed bag of feelings. Truly it is. I mean who would have thought that I would be sad to lose my phone number? Until we ran out of space, I really liked our house and will miss it. There are many memories here. We moved here as newlyweds. We became parents to eight children here. Our last three children were born in this house. It’s been my only home since moving to the U.S. 17 years ago.

The catch is, I have always dreamed of living in the country. I have longed for my children to enjoy the pleasures of country living and for the past three years we have been doing that by driving to the country during the summer. But it is getting tiring driving back and forth and being away from home so many days. Therefore, we decided to forgo our plans to farm at the farm incubator when we came across two homes each on 10 acres or more…..of course we looked at them!

By the time we decided on one and got back to the owners, it was no longer available. 🙁 Disappointing to say the least. It was a lovely piece of property. So we decided we did not want to lose out on the other.

This all happened within a short period of time in June-July. It still seems a bit unreal since we are still in between homes. If pinching didn’t hurt, I’d be asking folks to pinch me to be sure it was all real and not a dream.

We are moving to a more rural area, but still within the Chicago suburbs. We will have access to land, a larger house with LOTS of storage AND 3 potties. We are very excited!

Cartoon by yours truly (inspired by June Cleaver Nirvana) because I did not want to pay to use a comic strip! Please note: The order of children is not typical. Our younger children usually get first dibs on bathroom rights due to obvious reasons! 😉 Also note, my oldest does not find the humor in this silly drawing.

This week has not only been filled with physically moving but moving electronically. It was frustrating to find out our current phone/internet provider does not service our new home for internet, which led to more phone calls. But I think we are all set to go.

Now we just need to get everything moved to the new house. Let’s just say that being between two homes is not ideal! We are grateful to a new acquaintance/fellow farmer for their generous offer to help us by providing their 3/4 ton truck and trailer to get us all moved this weekend. We are amazed who the Lord uses sometimes, truly amazing. We have not even met this couple, I inquired about their farm as they farm using horses, something I have always been intrigued about and they live within minutes of our new home. A few emails later their offer came. The generosity of strangers, plus they are open to us coming to their farm to learn about what they are doing. No, I am not saying we’ll be farming with horses, but it is a compelling idea. My husband prefers machines, there’s something more macho and manly about tractors than horses….I think.

Here’s to separation anxiety, it will pass and a the start of a new chapter in our lives….

Review ~ Squid Balm

Faith and Family Reviews received the following product in exchange for writing a review. While we consider it a privilege to receive free products to review, our reviews are our honest opinion and thoughts of the product.

Squid Balm

A Vast Variety of Vegan beauty goodies….

Vegan products that are Nut-free, Bee0free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, and gluten-free.

These products are great for sensitive skin types!

Solid product means Squid Balm is TSA friendly as well as eco-friendly.

There is a myriad of choices on Squid Balms Website ranging from skin and body car to hair care! The products are scented or unscented…something to suit everyone’s taste!

OUR REVIEW:

We received the following products:

UNSCENTED ~ Squid Balm Solid Lotion Bar

UNSCENTED ~ Handcrafted Cold Pressed Avacado Oil Soap

UNSCENTED ~ Squid Silk Solid Conditioner Bar

Squis Squeak Solid Shampoo Bar ~ PURE

Gentle Oil Cleanser ~ For Normal Skin

This is such a wonderful product! I must say that I sought them out for my daughter who is 2 and has severe Eczema on her little body. I am tired of using steroid creams and was searching for a natural alternative when I found Squid Balm. I opted for the phytoestrogen (plant estrogens) free option that Squid balm offers…so I must say I cannot comment on the scented line of this product. The phytoestrogen free products are also free of xenoestrogens (synthetic chemicals that can mimic estrogen in the body), fragrance free, phthalate free, nut free, gluten free, and paraben free.  I opted for this option because of the Eczema and anything that a product can eliminate to suppress flare-ups is a plus in my book!  However, with that said…this product is so wonderful that their scented line can only enhance the “awesomeness” of Squid Balm!

On to my review…

Theese were all AWESOME products for my daughter with sensitive skin. She did not have an Eczema flare up while using this product. It actually helped to clear up the Eczema. I was extremely surprised to see how well she took to the product. Often creams (even sensitive, fragrance free) creams irritate her skin…causing it to “burn” as she says when applied. Squid Balm DOES NOT burn or irritate the skin…in fact she liked the lotion bar so much she carries it around putting the cream on herself. This is such a relief to a mother who used to have to hold her daughter down to apply cream! All of the products were great for her little skin… I liked the shampoo bar because it too was easy to apply and since she was already used to Mr. Squiddy (as we affectionately call the solid lotion bar because of the cute logo) she was not apprehensive about letting me wash her hair as she usually is with the commercial shampoo I was using.

The only thing I did not try out on my daughter was the Gentle Facial cleanser (I saved that one for myself!) the cleanser is nice and smooth and does a great job! In fact I like it more than the cleanser I was using previously! The only thing I wish is that the bottle I was given included a pump…I received the 1 oz size which does not come with a pump. I would imagine that a pump dispenser would be much easier to use with the product and cause less waste!  I must also admit that I swiped the conditioner bar for myself (my 2 year old does fine with just shampoo and no conditioner) I am currently using this in lieu of shave gel…let me tell you this is by far the BEST thing I have used for shaving! The conditioner bar has many used from traditional conditioner to styling crème…but I liked it best as a shave lotion.

All in all these products are truly AWESOME! I am so glad I have found Squid Balm for myself and my daughter…we will use this product for years to come!

Unilever Products – Breyers, Klondike, & Popsicle Reviews

I SCREAM!  YOU SCREAM! YOU ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM!

According to the IDFA (International Dairy Foods Association) website.

“In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by a full 90% of the nation’s population. In the proclamation, President Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.”

The International Ice Cream Association (IICA) encourages retailers and consumers to celebrate July as National Ice Cream Month. In 2011, National Ice Cream Day will be Sunday, July 17.

The U.S. ice cream industry generates more than $21 billion in annual sales and provides jobs for thousands of citizens. About 9% of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, contributing significantly to the economic well-being of the nation’s dairy industry.

Founded in 1900, IICA is the trade association for manufacturers and distributors of ice cream and other frozen dessert products. The association’s activities range from legislative and regulatory advocacy to market research, education and training. Its 80 member companies manufacture and distribute an estimated 85% of the ice cream and frozen dessert products consumed in the United States. IICA is a constituent organization of IDFA.”

I’m sure everyone has had Unilever ice cream products and some point.  The the brand is familiar to most people.  This very greatful family sampled 3 different ice creams.

Our first sample was Breyers Blast Ice Cream – Waffle Cone with Hershey’s Chips

“Hershey®’s Mini Chocolate Chips and creamy caramel have a blast with chunks of fudge-covered waffle cones.”

The Blasts are AWESOME!  This ice creams gives you the craving of ice cream & chocolate and you don’t even need a cone!

We then had a tasting of Klondike Bars.  mmmmm….

“What would do for Klondike Bar?”  We stayed with the original.  Vanillia covered with chocolate.

Again, we love these!  I only wish they had the little bars.  They had them out years ago.  They were perfect for a snack and would be great for my toddler.  She was covered!  But, she enjoyed!

Our final sample was Popsicle.   We opted for this 3 variety package.  It offered Rootbeer (for my husband), Banana (for my daughter), and Lemon Lime (for me).  These have a great flavor also, and great for that heat wave we had last week!

I’ve never found a Unilever ice cream product I didn’t like.  Go out and grab some ice cream
