Cut Back on Food Waste

I got an email this week giving some great ideas on how to cut back on food waste from FreshtheMovie.com. It is sad some weeks what can get thrown out just due to lack of planning and preparing. One of the comments on the post gave some great organizing tips on how she (her name was Virginia) went from spending $400 month on food to $80-$130!

A couple of suggestions were make the most of your leftovers, when you can’t eat it, freeze it and other practical reminders on how to cut back on throwing out all that wasted food on garbage day. :-(

    I know we end up wasting a lot of food in our home. I have to do a better job labeling dates on things that get repackaged, and make sure they stay at the front of the fridge and cupboard so they’re “in my face” so to speak.

    I’ve taken to freezing a TON of food and vegetables — most of the vegetables are frozen to use later in soup. We’ve cut our budget wayyyy down saving stuff in the freezer (and, we do eat it!).

  3. Oh heavens, we waste so much food it is so sad. I need to start freezing more of our leftovers and just not make so dang much!

    I really need to be more diligent with freezing veggies instead of letting them go to waste. I do compost so it’s not a complete waste but still effects my food budget. Now if only you could freeze lettuce and onions!

  5. You can freeze onions. I usually chop them up as I would for soups and casseroles or ground beef and bag them. Works great for us!
